“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Actually, let me rethink that.

The best music is of course in Smash Bros. ;)

Zelda. Didn't even have to think about it.

Aw, darn it! You thought of it first!

And if megaman79 thinks he's the only one who appreciates F-zero music, then he's wrong.

The problem is, there aren't very many games in that franchise, so franchises with many games and therefore, many songs, kinda have the advantage...

as the biggest Zelda fan ever Im going to say...

... Mario

Yeah, as cool and classic as Zelda's original 8-bit theme is and how well Prime's tracks suited the different environments, SMG just kills it for Mario.

Even looking at the old sprite-based Mario games, there's a lot of variety between SMB, SMB3, and SMW.

Metroid.

Kenji Yamamoto is amazing.

Koji Kondo is a better composer for other franchises, but I don't think Tallon Overworld can be bested (listen from 1:30 to 2:30 if you don't like it initially, but the whole track is good once you get it). It suits the area perfectly. Yamamoto is one of very few composers that can do atmospheric music without losing the melody. Synthesised psuedo-choir voices are a surprisingly versatile instrument.

Even the main games that did not have Yamamoto composing still had great music (Brinstar and Kraid from Metroid, the Tunnel theme and Credits from Metroid II and Main Deck from Fusion). Yamamoto also remade the NES Metroid for Zero Mission.

i like Zelda best, but that doesn't mean the other Nintendo franchise don't have amazing music either.

If zelda is 100%

Mario is 95%

Metroid is 90%.
