About the comment about how there should be more games displaying this kind of mastery, it's hard to frame a game the way they did with AW. When you're going for a high level of graphic detail, you need to make compromises. Such as heaving the game take place in very dark areas, fog, and limited environment. It's like Super Mario Galaxy. To reach that level of graphic detail, they had to break the worlds up into manageable pieces. However, both environments work really well within the context of the game, and it's nigh imperceptible that it's been segmented. My point is, it's very difficult to come up with a very convincing level of segmentation without ruining the atmosphere and context. It isn't like you can just remove all trees and call it an alien world with no trees. You need something concrete. Alan Wake does an amazing job of conveying the scope perfectly,....just don't expect it to be like that for every game. |
They also mention huge levels. And the game has daytime to. So I'm guessing the scope is big in this game. Not confined and limited environment as you may suggest.

I'm just going by the videos I've seen so far. The daytime ones I've seen have virtually no processing going on beside graphics. The NPCs were stationary, and most of the environment was far enough away that they didn't have to rendered completely.
I've also noticed that some areas of the game take place on crags...platforms or ravines, which really decrease the amount of things onscreen at any one time. I'm not saying it's bad in the slightest. If you've read my previous post, I'm not ragging on the game but rather suggesting why you don't see such technical prowess being displayed more regularly.
