Forums - Sales - 3 reasons why Halo: Reach WON'T outsell Modern Warfare 2

I am not sure but I think you do not know why Halo 3: ODST and Halo Wars didn't sell as well compare to the previous games. Halo 3: ODST was more of an expansion pack than anything else and there really wasn't a lot of reasons for Halo fans to buy the game if they already had Halo 3 except for firefight and a few other things. Overall it did not add anything or improve much/anything from what Halo 3 was.

Halo Wars was an RTS game as you know. You can not expect the hardcore Halo players to buy it because even though it has Halo in the name it's an RTS not an FPS. Totally different games. It was for the console as well which made it very basic and it did not even get hardcore RTS players reasons to buy it. So I really would not use Halo Wars which was mostly worked on by esemble studios and not Bungie themselves.

Going back to my Halo 3: ODST comment where I said it did not add much new to the game. Halo Reach from what we have seen and heard from Bungie so far will be almost a new and guaranteed improved game from what Halo 3 was. They are taking Halo to the next level with all these new features which guaranteed people will buy it because it will not just be some expansion pack and will boost the experience.

Every game loses steam after being released for so long because people move on and play "the new big hit" but Reach might pull the Halo community back together and it has a very strong fanbase to do so as well.

In the world of gaming no is king forever and as much as I love MW2 I think Halo Reach will have a serious impact on pretty much every single FPS Xbox360 game ones it is released.

One reason. It isn't on two consoles. End of thread.

So it will still be the better game imo. It will also have Bungie's touch, something COD will never have. It will sell million and be loved by the dedicated Halo fanbase.

I don't think you people realize what the attach rate is on Halo games (true stand-alone Halo games).

Halo 2 sold what? 8.5 million copies to an Xbox user base of around 25 million? Halo 3 eclipsed 10 million and launched to a user base of 18 million.

Reach is going to launch to a user base of about 40 million, and be hyped beyond belief. My money is on Reach selling over 5 million copies on day 1 and hitting life time sales of about 15 million.

MW2 won't hit 15 million on the 360 because there will be a new CoD game coming out before it reaches that point which will kill it's sales.

I know as far as sales dicussions go on this site, this is a hotly debated one, so I'm going to give you my reasons for why Halo: Reach won't sell more than Modern Warfare 2 on the 360.

1. It's not a true Halo sequel - The sales history of Halo has shown us that the best selling Halo games were the sequels, Halo 2 and 3. There's a reason why Halo Wars and Halo 3:ODST sold about half or less than those.

2. Halo seems to be losing it's steam - I could be very wrong about this, but to me, all these prequel games in the Halo universe are starting to get very tiring. And unless they make Halo 4, none of these spin-offs are going to sell more than Modern Warfare 2, and certainly not Reach.

3. Call Of Duty (Modern Warfare) is the sales king of FPS's on the 360 right now - Sorry to come off as a fanboy, but this has to be said. While I know Call Of Duty games come out every year, the success of the Modern Warfare series cannot be denied. While I'm almost 100% positive that Halo: Reach will outsell this year's Treyarch COD game, it's hard to believe that anyone can really believe that another Halo prequel game is going to outsell MW2, a game that's closing fast on Halo 3's total sales, and it's only taken a little over 3 months to do that, verses 2 1/2 years for Halo 3, and that was a true Halo sequel. Reach is not, so it won't even compare.

Post your opinions below on this matter, and discuss. I'm not trying to hate on Reach. The new, revamped engine looks great. BUT from a sales standpoint, it's hard to believe that this game is going to outsell the behemoth that is Modern Warfare 2.

1. Its a true Halo game and every game in succession which has been a mainline game has increased in sales. Halo 1 < Halo 2 < Halo 3. Therefore if Halo: Reach improves upon Halo 3 in every way it too will follow the same trend. What ODST did is irrelevant as it was only half a game, a new single player but no real new multiplayer and Halo Wars is as irrelevant to Halo: Reaches sales as Paper Mario is to Super Mario.

2. Wrong. Halo 4 will be as far as anyones aware the penultimate Bungie Halo.

3. The userbase has expanded since then, duh. Remember Halo 3 was launched with 1/4 of the current userbase. Stop repeating that its a 'spinoff'. Its as much a Halo game as Metal Gear Solid 2 is a MGS game inspite the different main character.

MGS 2 was actually a sequel, though. It may have a different character, but it had the advantage of having "2" in the title. This doesn't.

It doesn't have '4' in the title so it'll sell worse. Wow.

Do you know what its like to live on the far side of Uranus?

It will probably sell more than MW2 on the 360, but not combined sales..

Combined sales?

MW2 is at nearly 17 million only 4-5 months or so after launch.

It will ship at least 20 million. Halo won't come near that.

It will be interesting to see how it competes against MW2 on the 360 though, which should reach at least 11m.

By combined sales I meant it won't sell more than MW2 360 + MW2 PS3.

I know, I just thought it was so obviously impossible it didn't need to be mentioned.

your reasoning as to why is imo horrible, about the only thing I agree with you is that Reach most likely won't sell as much as Modern Warfare on the 360.

Where are people getting that Reach isn't a sequel? It's actually the FINAL sequel that Bungie's making, it's going to be HUGE...

i love how people argue it will 'have bungies touch'

theres a pretty hard to prove intangible

it also wont have 'infinity wards touch'

which is almost like a midas touch

Last year's game of the year turned out to be Silent Hill : Shattered Memories (online GOTY was COD 6).  This year's GOTY leader to me is Heavy Rain.
