Forums - Sales - 3 reasons why Halo: Reach WON'T outsell Modern Warfare 2

Hey ODST is around 4 million, a real Halo should sell twice as much.

I see your point, but that would be around 8 million, which is still about 2 million less than Modern Warfare 2.

It probably won't sell as well as MW2 on the 360 but your reasons are horrible.

Looking at the sales of an RTS and an expansion that used the same engine as a 2 year old game and did not have its own multiplayer matchmaking system and saying that these two show that Halo is becoming a weaker brand is just plain wrong.

Thats like looking at the sales of GTA: Episodes of Liberty City and saying that the GTA brand is weakening because the expansion didn't sell 8 million. News just in, expansions don't sell as well as full games.

Looking at it in perspective though shows you how wrong you are about the Halo brand strength. Halo Wars is the best selling RTS on consoles of all time, ODST is probably the best selling expansion of all time (may be wrong on that one) and Halo 3 was the most played game on xbox live in 2007, 2008, 2009 and is currently the second most played game behind MW2. Does that sound like a weakening franchise to you?

The only reason Halo 3 is the second most played game on Xbox Live right now is because almost 11 million people own it. So many have it they can just sign in if they want to play a match. I'm talking about the sales brand, though. I can be wrong, but Halo: Reach is almost like ODST in that, even though it's a full fledge game this time around, it's still not a progression in the story, therefore NOT a true sequel. We already know about Reach, and that it all happened before the debut Halo game. There's not that much mystery in the story.

It doesn't matter how many copies a game has sold 3 years after release. The only reason people would still log into a game that came out so long ago would be because they have fun playing it hence showing that the brand is still strong.

According to you if its the most played game because it sold so much then Guitar Hero 3 and Gears of War should be in the top 10, so why aren't they?

There have been plenty of games that have jumped around in their universes timeline and still been huge games, Metal Gear Solid being one of them. It doesn't matter if we know what happens to Reach, all we care about is what happens to the Spartans in our squad. People came into the movie Titanic knowing how it would end and it was until recently the biggest movie ever released. All that matters is how Microsoft advertises the game and I can assure you they will do it justice.

Like I said your arguments don't hold weight. MW2 may very well sell more than Halo Reach, that all depends on its legs, but not because of the reasons you listed.

The definitive evidence that video games turn people into mass murderers

while i don't think it will outsell MW2 i really have no idea. Halo Reach cannot be compared to ODST which had bad buzz for being just an expensive expansion which imo it was. Reach is a full fledged new game and is going to be advertised as one and it will defenitly sell much better. I predict Reach will outsell MW2 in America by a bit as well as in Japan XD, but will be behind in Europe. It just depends on how far behind it will be in Europe.

Halo:reach is being pushed as the next leap in the Halo series an I believe that message will reach the masses and we should see Halo:reach surpass Halo 3 in sales.

If it can outsell MW2 on the 360 ? well that really depends on the MP beta. If it is well recieved by the community there will be no stopping it and MW 2 will be regulated to 2nd place on the 360. Will have to wait for the beta to come out but I'm guessing Halo:reach MP is going to be the new standard in FPS play.

I think Halo's popularity/sales reached it's peak with Halo 3.

You can't tell if a game has reached its peak unless the next full fledge game of the series sells less.

Edit:

On topic, I won't say that Halo reach will outsell MW2 since it's multiplat and a huge success, but I will say it will most likely surpass Halo 3 sales.  People aren't a dumb as many people think, just because it doens't say 4 doesn't mean people will look at it as an expansion or spinoff.  Microsoft will spend huge amounts of money advertising this game and looks like Bungie is adding new things to Reach.  I think people's unborn children will know about Halo Reach by the time it releases.

And you can't tell that the next game will sell more.

Do you honestly think that Call of Duty's popularity won't have an effect on future Halo games sales? I'm willing to bet a ton of people will abandon Halo MP in favor of CoD's if they have'nt already.

It's possible that future games will outsell Halo 3. Sure. But my prediction is that Halo 3 will be the best selling in the series.

No, look at Call of Duty 4.  It topped the amount of people playing on Xbox Live for a few months but Halo 3 came back up.  Reach is changing up the formula some and it should make the multiplayer fresh again so no, I don't think COD will affect Halo's sales.

Yes it will surpass MW2 on the 360. It will be 360s best selling game. Prepare for some huge marketing for Reach. Alot of MW2 players are ready for a new big fps because of how buggy and glitchy MW2 was. The glitches combined with the boosters has ruined MW2's online play. Combined with the fact the install base of the 360 is about 3 times what it was when Halo 3 came out. If the attach ratio is remotely near what Halo 3's was it will demolish MW2.

Okay, well thats CoD 4.

The Call of Duty franchise has gotten bigger since then. Where as halo hasn't mainly due to the lack of a full fledged sequel. I think that Halo has wasted its time with Halo Wars and ODST. I think that those two games straying from the usual Halo formula has hurt it's popularity as a whole.

I just CoD has stolen a good portion of Halo's thunder.

Combined sales?

MW2 is at nearly 17 million only 4-5 months or so after launch.

It will ship at least 20 million. Halo won't come near that.

It will be interesting to see how it competes against MW2 on the 360 though, which should reach at least 11m.

By combined sales I meant it won't sell more than MW2 360 + MW2 PS3.

To be 100% honest, this thread is EXTREMELY premature. The marketing blitz has not even near started yet. The FEATURE SET hasn't even been revealed. And this will have a public beta consisting of a huge percentage of ODST owners come May 1st.

How about we wait until all of that is right in front of us before we condemn the sales of it. Is that too much to ask?
