Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Could Nintendo survive without Mario?

What alternate dimension are we talking about because you could never eliminate Mario from history and in another reality without Mario some other fat, Italian plumber would take his place. Gaming could never exist without a million fat Italian plumber games

without a TRUE mascot on whom they'd base their games in different genres, they'd probably just do what sony does and create different IPs for different genres, like GT for racing, LBP for platformers, Killzone for FPSs ...etc

they might not sell as much as if mario had starred in them but what Nintendo makes is usually good product and so it'll sell based on that

of course people would still be begging for mario games (including me) ;)

If it's beyond this point, then (sadly) yes. . .

This is like asking if Disney would survive without Mickey Mouse. When was the last time they put him in any GOOD movies or TV shows? And yet they're doing just fine.

well, granted, they have hundreds of different brands as well. And there is no Super Mario World, California.

Nintendo is Mario, and they would have a hard time if fans kow there won't be Mario

Nintendo could exist without Mario but you also can't ignore the history the company has with Mario, meaning that while Nintendo would exist, obviously it wouldn't be nearly the same company. SEGA would have probably had better luck during the earlier console war generations, and Nintendo as we know it today would probably be smaller and may not have survived through the lean times of the Gamecube...but obviously that's all speculation!

GameCube was lean times? Sure Nintendo didn't have a good marketshare but profits were through the roof. As for could Nintendo survive if Miyamoto died tomorow? The sad answer is yes. Miyamoto has done great things for Nintendo and continues to do so. However Miyamoto isn't the brain making new IP's like he once was. Today Miyamoto produces games not develops them. Because of this Miyamoto is today expendable. Nintendo can maintain Miyamoto's IP's without him.

The real question is, without Miyamoto could Nintendo have ever become the gaming power house it is today and the answer is a resounding No!

I said 'lean times' simply because when you look at how much hw+sw pushed by GC compared to Nintendo's other consoles, it clearly didn't stack up. I wasn't implying that they were 'on the precipice' then or anything like that...

Bah!

They've got Link and Pokemon, yeah they would be fine. They might take a blow but I think they would recover.

Nintendo could survive without Mario because it has built itself up with Mario.

But it would not be where it is today without him. And it would not be going forward to thrive without him.

I am Mario.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

They could still easily survive but its just wrong without the heart of Nintendo.
