Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Could Nintendo survive without Mario?

Not at all!

With no mario, no Donkey Kong, No super mario bros, no nes, then no GB and no Zelda and there it goes. Sometime, history depend on a little detail and for video game it was Mario. So basically before saying "oh yes they would still have Wii fit and all" you have to calculate every consequence of what would have happened without Mario which is pretty difficult to do. But it very unlikely that video games would be like we know them today. People tends to fall in a very easy chronological mistake.

Now if the question is would Nintendo survive with no Mario from now on then I will say yes of course. But people her seems to mix present and past with this question.

Yes Nintendo could go on without Mario.

I am sure Luigi would find a way to save the princess, AND still sell a ton of game.

if they didn't have mario they'd have another mascot staring in games of exceptional quality. As long as that mascot weren't luigi.

yes.and then they would start doing as sony and microsoft who had nothing (and still mostly they dont) and pay devs for exclusives with the money they have. And problem solved. Wiiplus crowd, other franchises, buying exclusives(like the psp does even if it can sell for its live), AND VOILA.

Not sure about Mario, But if Shigeru Miyamoto died tomarrow Nintendo would be so screwed I can't even imagine it...

I know I wouldn't be too happy with Wario.

With Wii and DS no problem. Mario is huge but not the driver of success of those systems. Nintendogs, Brain Age, Pokemon and Wii series have more to do with it than anything Mario's done. Besides they still have Zelda, Kirby, Donkey Kong and lots of other IPs.

During GC and GBA days I might have had a different opinion.

However, no one sells 2d platformers like Mario. NSMBW puts Warioland Shake sales to shame.

Nintendo has made more money off of Wii Fit than Microsoft will have in a decade off of both Xboxes, more than likely. Have they even managed to break even yet?

Nintendo could exist without Mario but you also can't ignore the history the company has with Mario, meaning that while Nintendo would exist, obviously it wouldn't be nearly the same company. SEGA would have probably had better luck during the earlier console war generations, and Nintendo as we know it today would probably be smaller and may not have survived through the lean times of the Gamecube...but obviously that's all speculation!

GameCube was lean times? Sure Nintendo didn't have a good marketshare but profits were through the roof. As for could Nintendo survive if Miyamoto died tomorow? The sad answer is yes. Miyamoto has done great things for Nintendo and continues to do so. However Miyamoto isn't the brain making new IP's like he once was. Today Miyamoto produces games not develops them. Because of this Miyamoto is today expendable. Nintendo can maintain Miyamoto's IP's without him.

The real question is, without Miyamoto could Nintendo have ever become the gaming power house it is today and the answer is a resounding No!
