With Wii and DS no problem. Mario is huge but not the driver of success of those systems. Nintendogs, Brain Age, Pokemon and Wii series have more to do with it than anything Mario's done. Besides they still have Zelda, Kirby, Donkey Kong and lots of other IPs.
During GC and GBA days I might have had a different opinion.
However, no one sells 2d platformers like Mario. NSMBW puts Warioland Shake sales to shame.
