Thats a funny way of thinking. From your logic, conservatives think that they are better than people below them so thet don't deserve rights, whereas liberals think that people below them do deserve rights. Still, I dont see how a liberal idea, such as letting women vote, is wrong because women should earn the right for themselves. The actual answer for why educated people are more liberal is qutie simple. The more educated you are the more likely you are exposed to be exposed to other cultures and ideas. An educated man meets different types of people at his university, is introduced to many ideas in his studies, and has more money and reason to travel and encoutner differing ideas and cultures. An uneducated person does have these opportunities, and thus is more likely to give more weight to the ideas of his original social community. |
I think an uneducated grunt in the Army has probably had far more extensive exposure to the cultures of Afghanistan and Iraq than most college students; and there are soldiers deployed to all corners of the world, in non-combat, peace-keeping and humanitarian efforts.
As a university graduate I can honestly say that post secondary institutions give you an insanely filtered view of other cultures that doesn’t come close to expressing anything about a culture. The best analogy I can give you is of a British chef who learned how to cook Chinese food from a second generation Italian-American chef who has only cooked food-court Chinese food, and this chef claims that he is giving you authentic Chinese food even though he has never been to China. Even those that have visited the countries they’re teaching about have really not had that extensive of exposure to the culture; and it would (sort of) be like a person living in Las Vegas for 2 years claiming to understand the entirety of American culture.
As for being exposed to different ideas, colleges are primarily places where you’re expected to conform to conventional (so called "Liberal") ideas; and are really not the place where conventional ideas are challenged anymore. I dare you to take a Women’s study course and at the first opportunity argue that modern feminism is no longer about promoting equality; after all modern feminists consistently turn a blind eye to honour killings in western countries, refuse to speak out against spousal abuse in minority communities, and are unwilling to look at how women in third world countries dream of one day having the rights to be as oppressed as they are. I’m willing to bet that regardless of the quality of your work you will receive a 0%, and no matter what other work you produce for that class you will certainly be getting an F.
One of the core contributing factors to why subjective fields like the humanities are full of liberal academics is because unless you conform to the ideologies of the establishment you can not succeed.
