I think Mario is the better franchise with more solid gameplay mechanics and likable characters and worlds. Zelda is a close second of course but I just can't put it above Mario.

Mario by a landslide now a days. Nes/Snes days Zelda had me more I think.

Easy choice for me. I grew up playing Mario from a young age and they games are just a lot more "fun" to play. Most people agree, you can see from the sales numbers.

Well, Super Mario 64 is my favorite game of all time...

... But even so, Zelda wins out as a franchise, for me. Three Zelda-games are on my Top 5 Games of All-Time, after all!

Zelda wins out for me, personally. Link's Awakening, Spirit Tracks are my favourite portable games alongside Advance Wars. Ocarina, Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess are among my favourite console games ever. Galaxy is the most fun I've ever had in any single game, but personally Zelda does more for me.
