vanguardian1 said: HD Penetration @ 60% in Japan doesn't seem to be hampering Wii's sales at all. At the end of last year, HD market penetration was 18% in North America. ~_~ Europe is even farther behind in this aspect. HD is nice, but it looks to be far from an effective reason for affecting console sales for this generation.
You know this generation will last 2-3 years after the SDTV cutoff right?

And my point is that it won't matter to most people, as long as it has the games that people want.

Nobody is crazy enough to accuse me of being sane.

There is no SDTV cutoff. It's an analog TV cutoff.

Hardcore gaming is a bubble economy blown up by Microsoft's $7 $6 billion losses.

So your TV goes black, and you no-longer are able to watch TV... nope. who cares. You already rotted your brain out watching 'that 70's show' in SD, before they cut the signals. Black screen... fuzzy screen... Image... it dont matter.

Kwaad said: Ummm.... 100% penetration would be roughly 110million households. They are at 30% already. I think the average person buys 1 TV every 5-10 years. The market is at about 30% ***TODAY***
I would agree with all of this also, however i'd like to see where you heard your 30% number?
last year at this time, it was at about 20%. The price of HDTVs have dropped alot in the last 12 months, and it's going down more this year. I would expect another 10-20million HDTVs (at least) sold this year. That would bring the HDTV penetration to at least 40-50% (looking at the low end) HDTV sales are expected to take off this year.
Your expectations are accurate here I think yes.
OriGin - are you anti technology? Do you go out and buy an old 1985 atari computer because you dont need a C2D? I'll sell you one for 2000$. I mean. Their just as good as a new one. The technology isnt that big of a diffrence. No need to ever upgrade. OriGin - have you ever sat on a couch and watched a *whole* TV program on HDTV, and then switched the channel to a SDTV channel? It makes you wanna PUKE.
Dude, i'm not anti technology at all, i think laterally. No need to be silly sarcastic. Of course for YOU technology is a big thing, you can afford the latest and greatest and you believe everyone thinks in a similar way to you. If everyone upgraded to the best and bought the best all the time just because it was available why do AMD still sell ANY cpu's? Wouldn't everyone just buy C2D's then? I've watched a lot of HDTV vs SDTV, and yes it is better, much better, I have a HD Projector and I work with 1080P panels every day. But when i show my girlfriend the difference between HD and SD she can hardly tell the difference. When I point it out to her she can then see, however doesn't really care. Also, it makes YOU wanna PUKE, not everyone. HDTV is fantastic but that doesn't mean everyone is going to buy it. I'm not bagging the technology, I'm a tech buff too, but i've come to realise to much in the recent years about the mindsets of consumers on the market, there are so many people that couldn't care less and can't afford the biggest, best and greatest.
You do know that in 2009 they will cutoff analog TV broadcast? (USA) Meaning if you used to watch TV on your old tube... You better think again.
That's right, but you can get SDTV's for a LOT cheaper than HDTV's. the SDTV's can still be input with a HD digital signal if they need be. Every ma & pa kettle aren't going to go out and choose HDTV if an SDTV looks 'almost' as good to them and is 1/4 the price.

SDTV broadcast = stay Analog broadcast = gone Most of the cheaper HDTVs sold today, dont even have the digital box built in. They are not removing a SDTV broadcast, they are removeing the analog SDTV broadcast. So you will ***have*** to buy a Digital tuner. Most likely for around 89-300$ A cheapSDTV one.

Yes... so people don't HAVE to buy new tv's if they want to watch television. Wasn't that part of your argument? Why ignore my whole other post?

grat's on 100 ;p I just didnt feel like posting it. In refrence to my numbers. that link I posted said something like 31.4million households have HDTV. I then went to the uscensus website, and found average household population in america... 2.54 or something like that. So 300,000,000/2.54 = 118,110,236 households. 31,400,000/118,110,236 26.585% of US households have HDTV. HDTV sales are expected to almost double in 2007 from 2006. That would add at least another 10-20million HDTVs... 10% are re-buys. 9-18million more households. That would bring it from 26.5% to 35%-44% (at least)
