ok, I haven't ever really used the chat here and I don't know how difficult it would be to pull this off, but I think a lot more people would use the IM if you had the ability to have the chat window 'float' on the screen like it does on facebook and several other sites. Like have it be kind of like an IRC client where you have one or more 'rooms' and also the ability to hold a private conversations with people. Obviously you would want to make it an optional thing that you can turn on or off, but I know I would be much more likely to use it if this was the case. Also, since a lot of people here have screen resolutions of more than 1200px width of the site content, it wouldn't be too big of a deal as far as blocking the content of the main screen.
