On rails is what made it successful so why change it? Look what happened to banjo kazzoie; the game wasn't bad but people didnt like the change to mostly vehicle. A good ol traditional version like Star Fox 64 would be great.

You should congratulate me. I destroyed the vile red falcon and saved the universe. I consider myself a hero.
I fired up SF64 recently and had forgotten how epic and fun it is. Nostalgia aside, it's still the best of them.

Considering the two most successful and popular games in the series are the original (SNES) and StarFox 64 (N64), it makes the most financial sense for Nintendo to just make a new game along the same gameplay formula as those games.
Now of course, innovation is good, but they shouldn't change the formula too much. Part of what makes most of the other Nintendo franchises so successful is that they keep what works from the old games and uses them in the next game. But for Star Fox, they seemed to forget that and just tried to re-invent the series every game. Or worse, tried to make a whole new game while tacking on the 'old' Star Fox levels and gameplay here and there to tease the fans of the original games.
So, like Nintendo has been doing with most of its series this gen, I think Nintendo needs to try to get back to its roots and create a whole new Star Fox game that combines all the best elements of the past games in one. In other words, they need to make an 'Ocarina of Time' or 'Mario Galaxy' for Star Fox.
I'm hoping the next starfox uses the Wii sports resort airplane controls
Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!! It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!! Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)
Starfox should stay Starfox.
All I'm going to say.
Pixel Art can be fun.
I always feel "rail shooter" tends to sell Starfox 64 short. I don't know any other rail shooters where you actively move around and dodge enemies and can barrel roll or summersault. And then there were the "Free range" segments where you did have complete control of your ship and weren't on the rails anymore.
If they could do it right I wouldn't mind Fox McCloud being some super agent who is an ace pilot and who can handle himself like Sam Fisher, Solid Snake, James Bond or Jason Bourne in ground combat. I can't imagine him blasting away like Master Chief, but I can imagine him being stealthy and deadly.
However, based off of the actual quality of the games that they've done, I'd suggest that he stay his ass in an Arwing.

Arg...no offense, but Nintendo already had enough Bounty Hunter/Secdret Agent type characters. I'd be happier if they kept him as he originaly was, a freelance vigilante type character trying to live up to his dads image. If they turned him into that type of image, we'd have yet another 'bad ass gun wielding super spy' wannabe for Smash Bros. Its bad enough with all the people fighting between Fox, Falco, Zero Suit Samus, Snake and Captain Falcon.....
I would like to see another StarFox Adventure style and bring back the Super Smash Melee Fox look. None of this new kiddy looking Fox. Then again another onrails would be great. Just give me more StarFox Nintendo!!!!!
