Forums - Gaming Discussion - Sony: PSN Is 'A Lot More Egalitarian' than Xbox Live

Sony: "Our stuff is better."

As for this thread, pretty much none of the discussion is even in regards to the quoted statements.

Sony is only keeping it free because they know it would piss people off if they start charging for it. But they know that they could use the money. PSN is probably the biggest loss for them on the whole PS3 thing. They started charging developers/publishers for putting content on PSN a few years back to keep the losses under control.. In case you missed that:

http://dlb-network.com/2009/03/sonys-publisher-fees-are-hurting-online-content/

Whether PSN is up there with XBL or not is debatable, and since I haven't touched PSN in a long while, I can't comment on that, but there are still some XBL features I bet players prefer that apparently PSN still doesn't have, like the party system and chat in every game and cross game, but that's not a lot to go on. Maybe PSN will implement those soon, but I doubt it would be possible to support it in every game without increasing load during gaming. Sony is obviously a hardware company, and on the software (OS) side they have always been playing catchup (or ketchup,, I'm hungry..) with the X360.

But you gotta love PR talk.. They can always turn something they actually dislike into something positive..

Let's see...XBL is $50 a year, and MORE people are using it then the FREE PSN...lol...seems like they are NOT equal.

No.

Excluding PSP numbers......still no

^This right here

As the PSN numbers also count accounts made online and used on PS forums and also since everyone has a psn account for everyday of the year....it easily has more people using it.

Sony = accounts PSP, PS3, Playstation forums (!!!)

MS = unique Users

Your joking right? Did you even read the posts you're replying to? Even if we assume that there are ppl with 10 PSN accounts while EVERY single account on XBL is unique, there is no way to prove how many unique users there are on PSN vs. Live. The only thing we can go by is official numbers, and those numbers clearly state that there are more PSN accounts than Live.

I'll say three things.

First, Sony usually says "we have blahblah PSN accounts", MS says "we have blahblah ACTIVE XBL users". You do the math.

Second, if Sony really had that many active users as they claim, they would be in a whole lot of trouble because of bandwidth costs. They can spout those numbers, but in reality, they wouldn't really like it.

Third and last, the number of users does not equal quality now does it? So.. Why are we arguing over this again?

I just agreed with the post I quoted.

MS has more than 23 million unique users, that is an official number.
Sony just talks about accounts, because that way they can include multiple accounts and make themself look like they would be leading over the Xbox 360.

I don't know one European PSN user who has only 1 account. 1 for Japanese, 1 for European and 1 for US content is almost a standard here. Then add 1 account for the PSP and 1 for the forums and you have 5 accounts for one user.

To me, it feels like they are just spinning the numbers, but I don't blame them, it it business. But you will never hear them saying something like "1 million people play one game every Saturday", like MS did with Halo 3. Or "we had more than 2 million people online at the same time" like MS did after the MW2 launch.

I think it is actually great that MS don't spin their numbers like this. Think about all these Windows Live accounts

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

I'll answer your third point first: I have no idea, but the person(s) I quoted felt neccessary to bring it into this convo. He also made a point of making PSN seem like shit because it has "less users" even though it's free. This is something that he completely made up. No fact, no figure, no nothing. So I felt the need to point out that that is absolute BS...because we have absolutley NO WAY of knowing which one actually has more people on it. The numbers we

Now onto point number 1 and 2: you are right. Sony and MS are giving us completely DIFFERENT figures here. MS gives us "blah blah blah ACTIVE" XBL users...whil sony gives us "blah blah blah PSN accounts". This means that nobody on these forums can claim to know the real truth...we are getting two completely different figures from two different companies...and as you mention, they are not the same figures.

If Sony had more active users they would say so. They know how many active users the Xbox 360 has and they know how many they have and they've had no problem claiming superiority where they feel it exists in the past and this is important.

If Sony hasn't said they have more active PSN users then they don't have more active PSN unique users and its as simple as that because their track record says that they speak out when it suits them.

It isn't a hard concept to grasp. If it were Nintendo you could argue they could have kept quiet because Nintendo doesn't run their mouth and obsess over every small detail. Sony developers, 2nd parties and Sony themselves have a lot to say about the Xbox 360.

In the end this guy is simply blowing smoke.

This conversation is really making my brain hurt with its circular arguments and pointless debate.

Is this even worth talking about, guys?

Or check out my new webcomic: http://selfcentent.com/

yup good old sony blowin smoke as usual, LOL

@WilliamWatts,
Yes.

@perpride,
# of active users IS important for an online community, especially when both companies talk about their systems being a social hub.

Overall, I don't like the way Dyer says stuff. It comes off as condescending. I love how Greenberg says "we will win in America" which is truth, and people bash him for it. Then Dyer just bashes the 360 in whatever way he can and people love it. I'm losing faith in this community as rationally thinking people.

I may seem to stand up for MS a lot, but that's because I generally defend the side getting attacked the most. Sony is glorified in some way for their mistakes, and MS is crucified for theirs. Where's the rationale in that?

OT: "So when people come to us, they can provide us with exclusive content and know that it's going to get to a lot more users because our machine has that hard drive. They don't have to create a lowest common denominator; they can do what they want it to do.”

I think not. So I guess Activision goes "Well, we sold almost 10 million copies of MW2 on 360, and just under 7 million on PS3, but all that matter is the hard-drive! Give exclusive content to Sony!". Since plenty of multi-plats sell better on Xbox 360, I'd imagine publishers would want exclusive content on the 360 over the PS3, this is assuming they want the content to be exclusive at all which is unlikely. What exclusive DLC is he talking about anyways?
