Forums - Gaming - Sony: PSN Is 'A Lot More Egalitarian' than Xbox Live

Despite the fact that Microsoft's Xbox Live charges gamers $50 annually for online gameplay, most players today are still likely to tell you that Xbox Live is a superior experience. Sony, however, has certainly made numerous improvements to its PlayStation Network, which remains completely free. Wrapping up our conversation with Rob Dyer, SCEA Senior Vice President of Publisher Relations, we asked the executive about PSN's growth, and particularly how third parties feel about the network.

“When I first started here [at SCEA] two years ago, it was slow and cumbersome and we were really struggling to put any kind of a dent into Xbox Live," Dyer admitted. But PSN has come a long way in just a couple years.  Dyer continued, "What we're now finding is we're at par and offering as good if not a better experience; and publishers are putting a lot of content on our system now that they can't put on Xbox Live. And having been a publisher on the other side, I can say that PSN is a lot more egalitarian. It's easier to get stuff up, it's easier to get it promoted and easier to get it to your consumer, versus what you have with Xbox Live. It's not as big a sales pitch as it once was, particularly when you saw the results we announced coming out of December. We're just going from strength to strength, especially with as many consoles as we're selling; people are hooking it up to the network and they're downloading stuff. It's simple math – the more you sell, the more people get online, the more PSN content you'll sell."

Downloadable content (DLC) is becoming a bigger and bigger component of the industry, as publishers look to bring in additional digital revenue and extend the lives of their retail games. This is one area where Dyer feels PSN definitely gives third parties an advantage of Xbox Live. "If you're making a game and you want to have DLC that you can send out to everybody on a system, if you're with Sony you can do that because everybody has a hard drive [with PS3]. Microsoft's consumer base, on the other hand, can't download everything. So if I'm a developer, which system should I make the content for? And look at the results for the GTA [episodic] pack... candidly, that's why it's coming out on disc, because a lot of people couldn't access it," he said. "So when people come to us, they can provide us with exclusive content and know that it's going to get to a lot more users because our machine has that hard drive. They don't have to create a lowest common denominator; they can do what they want it to do.”

1. I think XNA would disagree.

2. What are we looking at, the 1M+ downloads in its first year?  I don't think it could have failed harder if it tried...

Also LOL at all the people defending sony for not including a mic, but who crucify MS for not including wifi.

Agreed, the biggest drag with XBox Live is that for you to play online with friends, not only you will have to opt for paid subscription but your friends too!

But even if XBox Live would be free, I prefer the PSN. More good games are using dedicated servers for great performance. Even tiny 4 vs 4 battles in a game like Gears of War were too laggy for me, but with many exclusive PSN games 16 vs 16 battles are very solid (MAG even can do 128 vs 128 pretty well I'v read). IMO the exclusive content available on the PSN is also better like Super Stardust HD, Warhawk, WipeOut HD, etc.

With regard to user created content the PSN seems far more powerful (as some publishers said as well). For example the enormous amount of user created content available for LittleBigPlanet.

Then both services have some extra distinguishing features:

PSN: VidZone (viewing thousands of Music Videos for free, you can make your own playlists), Playstation Home (There are some nice places to visit, it's a nice additional option to get in touch with people with similar interests) or Life with Playstation.

XBox: Easier install process (good but not crucial for me, as a game is only installed once) and Party Chat (which is useless to me, if I really want to realtime chat with a person who is doing something else than me I could just keep on my laptop, but that hasn't been the case, cross game messaging in my experience is more useful and when playing the same game or sending an invite for a video chat IMO is enough).

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

^^ Actually aside from talking to people who've been rejected by Xbox Live what experience does he have of the service first hand to say one is more egalitarian than the other?

Meh, I'm a little tired of people who don't have an Xbox 360 talking about it like they have one.

Free DLC? Forza 3 has multiple pieces of free DLC, Crackdown does, Mass Effect 2 does, Left 4 Dead does as well. The only example of "Microsoft hates free DLC!" is one piece of Left 4 Dead content.

You don't have to use a computer for Netflix, you can add to your queue straight from the selection screen, which is separated into genres. If it's not there, then yeah, you'll have to add it to your queue from a computer.

themanwithnoname's law: As an America's sales or NPD thread grows longer, the probabilty of the comment "America = World" [sarcasticly] being made approaches 1.

Let's see...XBL is $50 a year, and MORE people are using it then the FREE PSN...lol...seems like they are NOT equal.

No.

Excluding PSP numbers......still no

^This right here

As the PSN numbers also count accounts made online and used on PS forums and also since everyone has a psn account for everyday of the year....it easily has more people using it.

Sony = accounts PSP, PS3, Playstation forums (!!!)

MS = unique Users

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

nothin wrong with silent gamers, it means you can hear less childrena

It also means that the chance of you coordinating a team attack drops to zero, which is kind of important in most competitive online games.

I'll mute the children as they annoy me. The other option is far worse when playing on a large server.

What large servers?  Majority of XBL online games are P2P hosting and have small player counts.

Which makes the lack of voice chat on PSN an even more egregrious error on Sony's part.

Some nice spin you got there, not matter what MS does it right and no matter what Sony does it wrong.

Yes, because I'm the epitome of positive when it comes to Microsoft and the RROD, continuing to charge for XBL when Sony keeps gaining ground feature-wise, and the handful of other fuck-ups they've commited this generation.

It's not entirely unfathomable that I merely point out mistakes made by each company when I see them... All three consoles have made serious mistakes this generation, IMO. Nintendo has merely made the least.

Obviously you don't remember me writing several nasty things about Microsoft in my editorials a few years back... I have no love for any of the console manufacturers yet people still peg me as a fanboy just because I said something negative about one of them. Just say the word "Natal" around me and watch what I say about it...

psn and xbox live are like two water fountains that are identical

except one costs 50 bucks

in the beginning xbl had it, now theyre almost the same, and tbh i like the community on sony better. major nelson and the other xbl personalities turn me off big time.

you can't hate Major Nelson. You just can't.

He is the probably the only unbiased guy in this industry. He owns a Wii and a PS3 as well and even promotes them from time to time. They talked about BluRay players and he said "Why not get the one that plays Uncharted?" and he said "congratulations to my friends at Naughty Dog for delivering a great game!" or he made an interview with the developers of scribblenauts on his show, because he liked the concept of this game and they are from Seattle, too. Keep in mind this is a Xbox 360 show normally, but he talks about their competitors in a very natural way. They discussed iPhone Apps, the iPad, Wii Motion + etc etc

He simply is a big gamer and one of the few you can listen to without a facepalm, because of this PR talk.

So, keep on hating Greenberg, Kaz Hirai, Reggie and some more, but not the only normal guy in this industry.

This! Major Nelson is a  bad ass!

To this day, the thing that still irks me most about the PSN is the lack of an included microphone. There are still too many silent gamers online.

Other than that, Sony has done a hell of a job improving the service... but I'll never, EVER understand the point of Home.

That's not a problem with PSN, but with Sony not including it with a purchase of a PS3.

I think it's good. Not everybody is into multiplayer and therefore needs a mike.

That's like saying Sony should have saved money and not included wireless in the console... after all, not everyone wants to go online.

The more peripherals included in a console purchase, the higher likelyhood of their use. To round out their "online experience" that they wanted to push so much, a microphone should have come with the console. After all, isn't their tagline "It does everything."?

I would also like to add Sony included everything else in the console why not add a cheap $5 mic?

That is pretty much my point. It's not as if a mic adds $50 to the console price. They're cheap. I'm sure they could have rigged a USB mic that plugs into the controller rather easily.

I realize your sarcasm...but alas, you're still wrong. I'll have to find the quote, but I've seen it from both Microsoft and Sony's camp. Guys from Sony have said that 75-80% of PS3s are connected to PSN (which is easy because it's free), and guys from Microsoft said that 50-60% of 360s are connected to XBL. Do the math.

Edit: Found the most recent articles, they're a little old....but do you think the percentages changed that much?
