Forums - Microsoft - Remedy 'Threw Away Six Months Of Work' Due To 'One Big Mistake'

Alan Wake's been coming for a long time. Six years to be precise. But when Remedy Entertainment started development on the highly anticipated title, they didn't realise that six months later, all would be thrown away and started again.

Why? Well in an interview with GI.biz, Remedy managing director Matias Myllyrine says it was due to one big mistake:

"We did make one big mistake, and we came back from that - it was trying to make a sandbox structure to a thriller, and that just really wasn't working. It felt deluded, and the pacing wasn't right - for a thriller the pacing is important, you need a bit of foreshadowing.

We probably threw away six months of work, which doesn't sound that bad, but it's a lot of work with substantial teams... we saw we could deliver an okay game, but it wasn't going to be a heart-pounding ride, it wasn't going to be a thriller in the true sense of the word."

Myllyrine also revealed that the game had been finished - other than polishing, balancing, tuning etc. - and fully playable since June last year.

The game releases exclusively for Xbox 360 in May, and is one of the most anticipated titles of 2010.

I gotta say i am glad Alan Wake wasn't made in to just another sandbox game.

Damn, thats alot of work to just be thrown away.

I'm gald to hear this in a way, sounds like they are commited to giving as an unforgettable experience, much like Heavy Rain is doing for me as we speak. What a year to be a gamer!

I'm also glad they scraped the idea of a sand box thriller. Anyways bring on Alan Wake!

they threw it away and Atari picked it up and called in Alone in the Dark?

Why is the word 'the' underlined in the article?

Anyways, it sounds like they know what they are doing, so I'm sure the game will be great.

because Alone in the dark is a sandbox game ?

Time to Work !

It's better off without it anyway. Max Payne wouldn't have been as good as a sandbox game.

Interesting concept but I don't see how a sandbox thriller would work.

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.
