Forums - Sony Discussion - Teletext : Heavy Rain Review (Abysmal)

Guys, the Teletext thing is outrageous, sure. But the real action for Heavy Rain is happening on the USER SCORES

As of now 5.2 on 118 votes. I defy anyone here to deny that's nothing else than pure childish XBOX fanboy behaviour. Gee, to think that's the kind of "gamers" you (xbots) socialize with on your paid Gold suscriptions, and the same people who gather around every forum (like these) and defend each other! fucking kids.

That's probably exactly what's going on and that's exactly why they should promptly be ignored.

Ah, another "praise/kill the review site depending on score" thread. This time it's pitchfork time.

Of all the many hypes we already saw this gen on all consoles, the one which emerged around Heavy Rain during the last few weeks feels like the strangest and most faked one to me. Quick time hype, so to speak.

emporers new clothes...?

I'm getting Heavy Rain and will play it through... but I think there is a strange elite attitude surrounding the game

It is almost as though it is impossible to criticise the game because Heavy Rain is somehow arty and high brow and that means it shouldnt be criticised because the developers have been brave.

It's ok to criticize it, but with fair and honest critic. I can take EDGE score, but I can't take this teletext crap. Have you read the review? If it's fair by you, why the hell would you want to get that game? Are you masochist?

Because I formulate my own opinions... ONE bad written review doesnt shape my opinion.   Why cant people just ignore it as an oddity... this constant bleating about the odd low review is just childish.

Childish, huh? Review scores are EXTREMELY important to developers! Dead Space got an 89 on metacritic, and that alone kept it from being"AAA." Don't you think that people have a reason to be angry or annoyed by something like that?

No I dont.

I could equally say that the dead space average was artificially high because of the five perfect 100's it received... dont you see that?

Its just opinions.

Professional reviews are NOT meant to be opinions by the author. They are unbiased measurements of the quality of the game.

If what you say is true, I could be a reviewer myself and give every game I like a 10 and every game I don't like a 0. That's not how it works.

Heavy Rain is the worst Final Fantasy game. Confirmed!

??????????????

Sorry, but that's my opinion.

I played the demo and thought it was pretty bad. Evidently, this reviewer feels the same as me. Do either of our opinions make Heavy Rain a bad game? No. Is this 4/10 from a non-mainstream review site going to make the average consumer avoid this game? I doubt it.

It's sad how true personal opinions are secondary for reviewers these days, especially for big games. All of the reviewers from the big websites are mortified to give hyped games low scores due to serious backlash (or job loss - Gamespot), and when a smaller website does it, they're mercilessly attacked. The fact that developers and gamers alike are so transfixed on the idea of "AAA" is really harming the industry. I mean, why do people actually believe that a game with 90 metacritic is wholly superior to a game with an 89? It's ridiculous.

Outrageous! Sony fanboys would never have done that to Gears of War 2!

I'm getting Heavy Rain as well, I have the SE preordered
(and - on a side note - I'm a bit disappointed that for this price they didn't put the soundtrack on a separate CD. Hell, the local retail version of the PC/MAC indie adventure Machinarium comes with a separate soundtrack CD for 30€).

As an avid fan of the classic adventure genre - which includes the subgenre of interactive movies - who has been playing lots of games from this genre for almost 20 years, I'm by default extremely interested if HR will really bring something new to the table.

After the first reviews came in, I got the feeling though that a good part of the VGC community were eager to quickly jump on the criticless hype train about a game in a genre they normally wouldn't have cared a second about. Well, I hope for them that after their playthrough(s) they'll still like the game as much as they already have decided to love it in advance.

Uhh. I read the review and I don't see what's so terrible. Granted, I haven't played the game, but from what I saw in the review it kind of just felt like this wasn't his game, so in his opinion the game isn't good. How in god's name are you supposed to write an unbiased review? That's like having an unbiased opinion. It's an oxymoron.

Despite having your own opinion, a reviewer has to step back and look at the broader picture. He has to describe why (or why not) certain things are not good in the game and then further explain by example. The reviewer in this case lets his "wtf, this isn't an ordinary game therefore it sucks"-thoughts dominate his review.

Despite the different nature of the game, that is not a reason to go all ballistics. Take a breath, look at the general picture and then judge. That's how a reviewer should work instead of just ranting his own personal feelings without taking into account who he is writing for.

But I kind of felt like he did say what he didn't like about it.

Reviews are opinions though, unbiased opinions (hopefully).

And there's really nothing stopping you from becoming a reviewer, countless people have started up random blogs to review games, though I doubt you would become a respected reviewer (which is probably what you would want to be) by giving every game a 0 or 10.
