Sony: PS3 shortages have hit the UK

http://www.videogamer.com/news/sony_ps3_shortages_have_hit_the_uk.html

My local Media Markt megastore is out of PS3s (Groningen, Netherlands) and there are reports of shortages from other European countries as well.

yeah that seems to be only for the 120gb model tho

At the MM megastore I was talking about all PS3s are sold out.

PS3 vs 360 sales

I think it is a combination of holding back ps3's for ffXIII and GOW3 release.

I have lots of friends who just seem to be waiting for gow3 or ffXIII to actually buy a ps3 and after that they will work their way backwards going through older games.

I think this year will be tough for Sony and keeping up with demand without hitting too many losses. At the time of MGS4 release, the ps3 was still expensive. Now we have a ps3 at a very competitive price and they are releasing 3 games which have the potential to push hardware; FFXIII, GOW3 and GT5.

As I've said in other threads I don't believe this is a manufacturing or Sony side issue. I think the issue is some retailers got caught adjusting their stocking/ordering strategies in light of the price drop, new model and new baseline demand levels (plus of course Tax refunds) and the retailers under-ordered.

Don't forget Sony doesn't get to shove the PS3 to the retailers, they order it and just because Sony feels it might sell X doesn't stop the retailer ordering Y because they disagree.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

PS3's lost at sea...

atlantis heard about uncharted 2 and couldnt help themselves =p

those VG charts tracks atlantis? maybe thats why there are 3  million+ ps3 missing since dec 31 2009 :p

other. I don't know what, but Sony is up to something.

i think there going to introduce a bigger sku which will sell with a profit, around march and then they will sell alot of ps3's then in march because of the shortages people who want a ps3 will wait till ther in stock and in march god of war and final fantasy will sell ps3's also, so in march they will clean up, just my opinion.

Basically i think sony are up to something or this is part of a plan, i just dont think they have actual shortages.

Didn't they say it was because of demand 20% over expectation?

According to VGC numbers retail sales for the current financial year are 11.5 million. Sony projected shipping 13 million this FY. I don't know how many Phats were in the retail chain on 31 March 2009 but PS3 is looking like it will retail pretty close to 13 million: if it averages 170K for the rest of the FY then it will get to about 12.6 million retail. GoW III and FFXIII boosts might get it close to 13 million. Slightly under 13 million retail for the FY (probably) vs. 13 million shipped (projected and almost certain to be achieved) + whatever Phats were on shelves at the beginning of the FY. Does that look like 2.6 million demand > supply?

Maybe you mean 20% greater demand during the holidays? That would amount to about 800K units during the holiday period, that could make a supply bottle neck post holidays for a short period until supply caught up. But that doesn't add up if there is a 1.7 million difference between shipped and retail to this date. With that many units in the retail chain the bottle neck can't be an unexpected excess in consumer demand, at least that can't be the reason this long after the holidays.
