I just told you that shipments for the DS are still higher than shipments for the PS2.

They did launch in some territories last year but haven't launched in any new ones for a while.   Recent shipments and projected shipments are still showing the numbers going way down.

There were dozens of threads like these before on vgchartz, they all looked and ended the same. Hindsight is 20/20 but there was a rather large base of people who believed that the Wii didn't stand a chance to beat the PS2 lifetime and there was an equally large base that believed that it was assured to beat the PS2 lifetime.

Overall, I'm glad I've never been as blunt and dismissive with my opinions and "foresight" or claimed analytical superiority (with no grounds at all) when discussing certain topics, a lot of users come off as mean and belittling in debates but most of them are gone today when all their bravado bit them in the proverbial behind.

I missed hard at the beginning of the gen (and, indeed, before it even started) when I said and thought that Wii would not be a success but the generation has progressed more or less exactly like I thought it would after that. A few years ago, that would have put a huge smirk on my face, I might even have sent a bunch of PM's to torment some people who were very brash and certain about their predictions and who attempted to ridicule anyone and everyone who spoke differently, but today I find myself not taking it too seriously.
I think it might be simply because I largely don't care about console gaming any longer (its been well over a year since I bought a console game).

Anyway, these threads are always a good read after a few years!

Edit; Turkish; the DS will more than likely catch and pass the PS2, it sold 25.000 units + last week and is still moving decently for an aging console. Its inevitable in my opinion, unless something dramatic and unexpected happens (full discontinuation and halted shipments).

DS has a longterm overtrack here anyway. We have its first quarter back in 2004 selling more than it shipped.

Wich shipments? PS2 did in all probability around 1m last quarter, how much did the DS do?

No it did not.  Over the last several quarters, PS2 shipments have been half of what they were the previous corresponding quarters.   Q1 2011 had 1.4 million shipped.  At pace, that would suggest 700k shipped.  Combined PS2/PS3 shipment data suggests it's even lower than that for PS2...unless PS3 had a really horrible quarter.   Total expected shipments are 300-400k.

The previous quarter we have exact figures for both where the PS2 and DS each shipped between 500-600k.   We won't have Q1 2012 figures for the DS until next week but the DS will have a spike in shipments because of Pokemon Black and White 2.

Nintendo is still projecting a further 2.5 million DS shipments over the next several months.  Sony is not projecting that many.

What the hell?? PS3+PS2 did 2.8m in the last fiscal quarter. People are saying 1.7-1.8m for PS3, that leaves the PS2 with 1m. So yes. PS2 DID ship around 1m. Tell me how much DS shipped when the last results were revealed?

I just told you the most recently known DS figures.  I've bolded them above.  Well get Q1 2012 figures next week.

Now, you want to explain to me how the PS2 goes from 500-600k in Q4 2011 to 1,000,000 in Q1 2012?   Especially given that every previous quarter has seen a drop in half of the shipments form the previous FY.   Shipments were dropping by half from quarter to corrsponding quarter and yet they jump from  500-600k to 1 million for no reason?

I'm using actual figures here.  Comparing them against previous quarters and the corresponding quarters of previous fiscal years.    You're getting 1 million from people that are just assuming based on the assumption of PS3 doing just 1.7-1.8 million of the 2.8 million shipped.

Now you tell me which figures are not only more realistic but based on actual trends and extrapolation and which figures are just hoping.

Wii will (obviously) make it to over a 100M and will pass PS1 but not PS2. It may eventually pass GBA if Nintendo are really serious about pushing it in other territories like they said plus it hasn't dropped to $99 yet.


Looking at the current total sales of PS2 and DS, it seems kinda obvious that DS will surpass PS2.
