I'm the living proof. I like handhelds. I like the experience and what it offers but that's just my opinion. It's just to show that gaming is the same on consoles vs handhelds. Similar experiences. (OK, handheld and console gaming isn't totally the same but certain games like RPGs can be close) |
i'm personally not crazy about the handheld experience but It's pretty irrelevant whether you enjoy both the home and handheld experiences or not.
the fact is they're not in direct competition. MS, sony and nintendo compete for third party devs and for sales. i don't see how DS sales would in anyway affect 360 sales for example. when deciding which handhled to buy, i needa make the decision of whether or not i wanna play prof. layton or mgs. when deciding between the home consoles, i needa decide whether i wanna experience the mario franchise, the god of war franchise or the fable franchise.
I play ps3 when i'm home...rarely pick up the ds. i play the ds on the way to school or other places. I'm not gonna go buy a ds on the hopes that bioware is gonna announce one day that theyre making bioshock for it. i'm gonna go pick up a ps3 or 360 for that. the simple reason is they're two types of products while very similar, not in direct competition.

The PS2 has sold 142 M
the DS might not get to a number much higher than that.. because its hardware sales are beginning to hit the market saturation point.. you can tell since its down almost severily year over year..
not only that, but with the rumors of a new nintendo handheld.. if they really do release one, they will kill of the DS rather quickly like they did the GBA. I still think that if nintendo doesn't end the DS, or announce a sucessor in 2010, it has a likely chance of outselling the PS2. |

Sure it's all shipping numbers, but it for sure represents that Nintendo didn't quickly kill off the GBA. The fiscal year after the DS launched, DS shipped 8.33M units, then 4.34M, then 1.59M. That's ~50, ~25, and ~10% of its peak year(17.59M) respectively.

gba sold 22 million after the ds was released, and Nintendo didn't really support it after it was DS was released. They kept shipping it but that's about it. Wii has been more successful than the gba as well.

Actually so far PS2 has sold 25 million since the ps3 launched. The number will probably end up between 30 and 35 million. GBA sold 22 million after the DS launched, but when you consider that GBA sold quite a bit less, if we go by percentage it sold about the same percentage of total consoles sold after the launch of the successor.
To nail the point home the ps1 sold about 20-25 million after the launch of the ps2, it depends on how you take into consideration the staggered japanese launch for both ps1 and ps2. Again the ps1 was quite a bit less successful than the ps2, but if we go by percentage sold after the launch of the successor it is not that different from the ps2 to ps3.
The more i look into it the more i cannot see the wii selling less than 25 million after the launch of the next wii system. I would guess more like 30-35 million. The only way i see the wii not outselling the ps2 is if the next wii launches in 2011 which is highly doubtful.

According to this data, after the PS2 came out, the PS1 sold about (shipped):
4.19 mil in Japan (19.4% of total)
12.13mil in NA (29.7% of total)
10.78mil in EU (26.9% of total)
That's 27.1mil worldwide, or ~26% of its total 102.5mil shipped. The argument that the Wii will die because the next Nintendo console will destroy it is put into question here, as even with its massive success and backwards compatibility the PS2 did almost nothing to stop the PS1 from selling.
Some conventional wisdom put into question from this: The PS3 selling poorly or being too costly is not making the PS2 sell better! The PS1 may have relatively better post-gen sales than the PS2! When the PS3 came out, the PS2 already shipped 24mil in Japan, 44.9mil in NA, and 44.8mil in EU, so 113.7mil total. To match the PS1's post-gen ratio, it'll need to end up shipping a total of 154.5mil PS2s. I don't see that happening.

Those worldwide sales could change at any time this year due to huge title releases, big titles being bundled with the console or the holiday season. The Wii launched in 2006 and my guess is it could be discontinued by 2012 or 2013 (due to the fact that the average video game generation last 5-6 years) The Playstation 2 has been on the market since 2000 and it will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of its release in Japan next month. The current worldwide sales of the PS2 should be around 150 million copies and by the time its discontinued,(which I predicted early 2011), I predict the sales to be at 160 million copies worldwide. The Wii will probably sell another 20 million copies in the next 2 to 3 years. The sales of the Wii will be around 90 million copies and by then Nintendo will probably make the decision to discontinue the console. So by 2011, The PS2 WW sales will be around 160 million copies and by 2012 or 2013, The Wii's WW sales will be at 90 or 100 million copies by the time its discontinued The way I see it, it will be impossible for the Wii to outsell the PS2 in WW sales. which means the PS2 will remain the best selling console of all time.
Thoughts? |
Your guess, average generation, probably, decision to discontinue. Yeah right.
Look at this and read my sign.

Maybe it's the fact that Sony was once on top of the mountain in this industry, and the fall from grace has been swift and brutal. The worst thing about being on top is the fall to the bottom, and maybe the transition from PS2 dominance to PS3 heel-dragging has had a damaging effect on the fanboy psyche, leaving them vulnerable and insecure. Maybe fanboys are suffering from a severe case of paranoid delusion, brought about by denial that the PS3 is in third place when once Sony was leading the charge.

the wii will overtake the ps2 in a couple yrs. Mark my words. lol

Actually, this is also something I can see pushing Wii in years to come... official launches in emerging markets like Brazil, Russia, Saudi Arabia and India for example. And there's also the inevitable iQue Wii (though iQue totals are counted separately, DS and GBA totals are actually higher than we know of.... as is N64 actually, given it was retrofitted for the original iQue console).
