Forums - Gaming - How the Videogame Industry Shot Itself In the Joystick--and Why the Wii Has Stopped the Bleeding

So Eli 5.3 was made out of an Xbox with a busted hard drive and PS2 with laser problems?

One more thing (now I'm all excited)...Wii has really put the game back in "videogame", and I think games are harder to review than media. How many playthroughs of Monopoly and with how many different people do you have to play it before you decide how good it is? How does playing it with your parents versus playing it with a bunch of drunken friends change your opinion?

"Traditional" one-player games are relatively easy to review like a movie or a book because they're quite linear. Multiplayer games are often reviewed on how many features and options they offer, but does that mean Risk is a better game than Checkers?

Nintendo saved gaming. It is that simple. 400, 500, and 600 dollar consoles were the wave of the future? As a hardcore gamer of twenty years, I can tell you that the line has to be drawn somewhere.

Gas prices are too high for consoles to cost so much, games to be pricier, and the same simple enjoyment to be lacking. No thank you.

Everyone in this thread should be praising Nintendo for what they have done with this generation of gaming. Even if you hate them.

Well imagine this because it's the way I see things

Imagine that you are a sport figherman and you along with your friends have camps on a lake where you go to fish and relax.  One day you notice construction going on and you find out they're building a theme park by the lake to attract more people to it.  They also decide that fishing in the lake the old-fashioned way is too hard so they stock the lake with thousands of fish so anyone who even puts a fishing pole in the lake can catch a fish.  Now would you think it would be fair if someone called you elitist if you complained about what was happening?  Would you call those people who came to that lake to visit the theme park and fished for 10 minutes and caught a fish a sport fisherman?

It's not the Wii's controls that I or many of the people are complaining about it's the games.  When someone aged 3 or 4 on a video on You Tube can be given a Wii remote and nunchuk, swing their hands wildly and randomly, and knockout fighters then there's a problem.  It's not a testament to how great the Wii's controls are it's about how dumbed down these casual games are.  I imagine some people think it's great if soccer mom Susan who has never picked up a controller in her life can suddenly play games with a bunch of people and hold her own with almost no skill but if more and more of these games are being made at the expense of other games what exactly do we hardcore gamers have to be grateful for?

See I disagree, if all your looking for is a GAME CONSOLE, then maybe, POSSIBLY, I could believe it. But SONY's consoles have the opposite effect your talking about. Sony consoles almost ALWAYS see more use than what they paid for, in fact almost no one dissagrees with the fact that you get your money's worth out of a PS3. It will be around for a LONG time, they'll continue to support it for a LONG time, and it comes with a High Definition movie player (which I've used at least 50 times). You don't even have to "wait for a chosen format" because the ability to watch the movies already came with your ps3. Rent them and enjoy them. I don't necesarrily feel like shelling out for the cost of a Wii knowing I'd ONLY use if for video games. I expect more out of my centerpiece for entertainment. Now the 360 on the other hand I'll understand. It's lifespan was already setout by Microsoft to be shorter than the ps3's, AND it features standard DVD playback. I don't find it very usefull as a centerpiece at all. But I can't see where your going with the Playstation 3.

Now I've read the whole thing and I have two things to say:

- I pity the guy's kid...Eli 6.3?  Seriously? :)

- I agree with him about review scores but I'm not sure he went into enough depth.  There was an interesting bit on Penny Arcade this week where Gabe was saying how he tried to finish Assassin's Creed at top speed to see if it had an ending, and he started to see the game through a reviewer's eyes: it's not pretty.  It's basically your job to speed-run dozens of games to completion every month.  It's already counter-intuitive to how an average gamer like Gabe plays, and it's that much more counter-intuitive to how most people are playing something like Wii Sports or Mario Party.

its not actually a kid--its a robot he made from red ringed 360 and dust voided ps3-

If you're going to troll at least try to be good at it.

You think gaming is too expensive now?  Go back and look at the prices that games retailed at during the SNES and Genesis days and price index them with the cost of games now.

Can you imagin how bad videogames would be if we had 30 Michael Bay types for every 1 Martin Scorcese?

I imagine that video games would be just like they are now.

I take it that guy's never walked into a video game store.

Gaming has been slowly decaying. The amount of gamers has been growing exactly as fast as the population has, so percentage wise, it hasn't been changing.

If there wasn't a Wii, I wouldn't have a console. I'd stick with my DS and my PC.

I didn't even have a GameCube, but the second I saw the first commercial for the Revolution controller, I knew I had to have it, and I bought 9 games within 2 months of launch.

Games are not being watered down or dumbed down or whatever your elitist ass wants to call it. The market is EXPANDING. There is still room for you. You have no need to feel THREATENED.

The Wii already has the most versatile game library in under a year. It has games for everybody. Well except graphics-whores, but that's not necessarily a relevant gaming argument, now is it...

Legend11, your fishing analogy doesn't work. Nintendo isn't stealing your lake. They went and found a bigger better lake with INFINITE fish in it and INFINITE fisherpeople are out here partying and fishing and having a great time. You can have your old lake. It's still cool. Sometimes I fish in both lakes. Don't worry about it.

So I have an elites attitude because I care about the quality of the actual product... rather then how much money Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft makes?

I'm sorry... I don't have any alligence to a company.  I don't feel the need to be on a winning team.  I'm fine just playing quality games on wherever platform they might offered.  That's all I care about.

seems I had a bit lysdexia(sic) going on =P

The point still got across though =)
