"There have been a bunch of rumors lately surrounding new Nintendo hardware over the past few weeks. One employee from a major publisher even went as far as to say that Nintendo might unveil a new platform at the Game Developer's Conference, which will be taking place in just a few weeks.

Now rumor has it that Nintendo has started sending development kits for their next DS system. These kits have, apparently, been received by numerous studios already. Additionally, if further speculation is to be believed, the company may start selling the hardware before the end of 2010. Nintendo declined to comment about the latest batch of rumors, but perhaps the DS 2 will be officially announced at GDC or E3 if the company intends to release the system this year."

It is possible that Nintendo could have sent out development kits for their next handheld even if it wasn't expected to be released until 2011 ... and if the development kits have only been sent out very recently it would be likely.

Its fairly safe to assume that new Nintendo hardware would be powerful enough to support ports from the Gamecube (and possibly the Wii), which means that some developers might want 12 to 24 months to develop games for the system before Nintendo released it.

I'm pretty satisfied with my DS lite..

I don't think they need an upgrade, but they did release the GBA in 1999, and released the DS in 2004, so a new handheld is due..

Possible, if they're out to release it in 2011. Not for a 2010 release, not unless they want a launch quite devoid of titles.

I could be wrong, but I suspect that the DS was released so early (as a third pillar) because Nintendo saw the PSP being released in late 2004 as a significant threat to the handheld market. While the impact can be debated, Nintendo has stated that they believed that a core reason why the N64 and Gamecube struggled against the Playstation and PS2 was Sony had an 18 month head start with both systems.
