Yesterday. You heard it here first....
When will PS2 be discontinued?
2010 | 13 | 13.98% | |
2011 | 37 | 39.78% | |
2012 | 21 | 22.58% | |
2013 or later | 17 | 18.28% | |
I have my own opinion | 5 | 5.38%
Total: | 93 |
Last year, or any time immediately before the March-October time frame when it debuted in most major markets.
Because the Ten Year Console Cycle is a myth, right?
In all seriousness; shortly after software support trickles down to nothing, SCE studio support stops, the price of the PS3 is closer to $199. I could see 2011 as the last holiday season for PS2 sales, ending the production run in 2012. But like everyone's been saying, as long as the platform is still generating revenue that offsets having a split console market, why stop?
I'm pretty sure this is the last year for the PS2.
It sold 30k worldwide this week, which is amazing for a 10 year old console. However, the PS2 has been been drastically decreasing YoY for the last couple years.
Next year, I think the system will have trouble passing 10k a week.
The end is near for it :(
PS2 released just now in brasil. It will be there for a long time. I guess after 2013. PS1 was produced until 2006. Thats 12 years. Ps2 is way more succesful and will be discontinued way later. If it is as long around as PS1 it would be 2012-2013. But now the developing countries play a bigger role. And you have to buy a new one if your old one is broken if your PS1 stopped working you could have bought a PS2. But thats not possible anymore. I think it will be 15years or maybe even more on the market (2015+)

No, i'm from Brazil and we have PS3 everywhere on the shelves. PS2 isn't selling as good as it did 4-5 years ago in here.

Lol. I know that you have Ps3s on the shelfs. But some guy from brasil explained me the situation some months ago here on vgchartz.
He explained that the prices for PS3 and stuff are extreme because they double the prices with dutys. So the PS2 was released OFFICIALY for 299. which is a good price he also explained me that the people still bought Sega mega drive games. And the PS3 and Xbox are just there for the richer people and so on moment I will find the posting where he explained me the situation and you can correct that if you want:
Here is the link to the thread with a similar topic: http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=93988
and here is his post:
"People. PS2 is still to be MANY years around. Like, here in Brazil the MASTER SYSTEM was discontinued in 2008 and MEGA DRIVE is one of the best selling consoles here.
And it's the reality of the most of under-development countries, the current-gen consoles are just for fanatics from middle class or rich people. They sell the megadrive for 300 BRL with games in memory, the right product a person with a salary of 450BRL and in a country full of piracy.
In some years the place that belongs for Mega Drive now will be of PS2, this the sad reality of Brazilian gaming industry, latest consoles costing 1500BRL and Mega Drive 300BRl.
For the developed world, ps2 is in a curve of declining, don't sell software, there is no high budget project for it, no blockbusters announced. It only chance is to turn in a indie supported plataform and it's huge amount of classics, we should wait for it ends."
Hmm I wonder where I read that PS2 was officialy launched in Brasil in 2009. I have to search a little more. I know I have read it . Probably somewhere else.
End 2010 - the next Xmas will see all of Sony's effort placed on the PS3.
You think PS2 will be discontinued quicker then PS1 ? Even if its more succesful ?
Yeah I found it not where I have read it but news on the Internet: Sony was celebrating the PS2 launch 2009 in Brasil.

"Funny story from our sun-drenched friends at GIzmodo Brazil; today, November 18, 2009, Sony have decided to begin officially selling the PlayStation 2 in Brazil.
It's priced at R$799, which works out to be around USD$461. So, yes, it's expensive to buy video games in Brazil. Our man Pedro tells us that with a nine year-old console only just launching, there obviously isn't an official PS3 presence, though he says Sony do sell some older PS3 games. For R$199 (USD$115).
Ever wanted to know why piracy was rife in South America, those prices might get you in the right direction."
18 November 2009 for 799 real thats damn expensive still. I dont get it hoq much is the duty for Consoles ? 400% ? Its bad for the economy if you do thinks like that.
