I didn't have a HD TV, but I wanted a console. By the time it was the maket leader already and I that couldn't be bad. I also liked the social-casual side of it. It helped me to turn my family into videogames. I am not the weirdo anymore.

Motion controls, Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Nintendo.
If it werent for the Wii I wouldnt be playing games this gen.
because i fell for the hype of super mario galaxy, and brawl and mario kart were coming out in the next 4 months.
Combination of brand loyalty and being genuinely intrigued by the motion control stuff.
While the Wii hasn't quite lived up to every expectation, I'm overall pretty satisfied with it. If I ever get a hankering for hi-def games I play 'em on PC.
motion controls. I was going to pass on it at first (since it was so hard to find) but then I saw some videos of Wii Sports and I had to get it. I had Zelda from 1 week after it was out til mid January before I could play it.
The reasoning behind my purchase of the Wii was actually three pronged. Brand loyalty is the primary reason for the purchase. I remember the day Nintendo said Revolution was the day I decided I would purchase that Revolution. I remember being so giddy and filled with anticipation at what Nintendo would offer next.
However also affecting my decision was exclusives. But then again that sort of falls under brand loyalty. I love my Nintendo games that I can't find on any other console. No there was no specific exclusive title that drove me to purchase a Wii but Nintendo's exclusive brands lead me towards the purchase.
Lastly Virtual Console, the day I found out Nintendo Wii would have virtual console was the day I already mapped out in my head which games I would be downloading. It definatly helped solidify my decision to buy a Wii!

Hah, Brand Loyalty I suppose :P
I had only ever gotten Nintendo consoles until I bought the PS3.
Though I suppose the exclusives were the reason for that loyalty. Pokemon introduced me to gaming, Super Smash Bros got me really into local multiplayer games (something I think Nintendo games are the best at), and after playing Pikmin, I knew I could never go wrong with Nintendo. So the Wii was a natural and obvious choice.
A bit of everything really. Though I will say most likely brand loyalty. I got my N64 and my GC before any others from their respective generations. I also wanted it for the games. I got it around mid 2007, making it my first next gen mostly because of how many awesome games had already come out for and ones that were.
Got it at launch, mainly for Twilight Princess (I'd gotten rid of my GC back in 2005). Virtual Console really sweetened the deal though.
Only system I got at launch this gen actually. Didn't get a DS until Advance Wars: Dual Strike and didn't get a 360 until Dead Rising. I got a DSi at launch though, if that counts.
