Forums - Sony Discussion - Buying a PS3, 2nd-hand or new... any advice?

I had the same question no more than a week ago and I decided on new.

Used on a console that can overheat or be mistreated so easily is just too much of a concern for me when I'm spending over $200.

New y'all say...

I can get my hands on a year old (thats what he says at least) 40GB system. I can get to see it working and it comes with GTA4, Unreal Tournament, Pro Evo 09 and Assassins Creed 1.
He's asking 200 euro's atm, i think i might be able to get it for 180...
New slims are 300 euro's without any games.

Any thoughts on that?

New, because if you buy a used console, you aren't supporting the gaming industry in any form, I don't care how much it is, its well worth 300 euro for a PS3.

Like buying any used computer with processors hot enough to require active cooling systems, buying a used PS3 or Xbox 360 is a bit like playing Russian Roulette.

The only reason to buy a used PS3 is if someone prioritizes PS2 BC over reliability and lower power/heat, which is not a very good one IMO. If I played PS2 games that heavily, I'd just use a PS2 instead.

Buy a new Slim; get the one year warranty.

it's up to you man. The system is probably out of warranty. If the thing breaks on you, you may end up paying the difference in price of a new slim to fix it. It should be noted that refurbs dont last either so you may end up falling into a vicious cycle. I never buy used electronics no matter how cheap. If it were something like a TV that rarely ever breaks, I'd undrstand but ps3 consoles break man...a lot.

The gamble is up to you though.

I would go for the new model. It has a bigger hard drive and uses less energy.

New with the uncharted 2 bundle Imo thats probably the best deal you could get

Well.... I bought a 80gb Used ps3 with 5 games for 250 not that long ago (around august 2009) and it came out to be one of the best deals ever x) I sold 3 of those games and bought some other ones. I haven't had any problems with the console so far.

That's a great deal there. If you are willing to risk it, it can either be a GREAT deal, or a bad one. IF you care about those games, it's even better. Keep in mind that every game was 60 at the time of release. How much do you know the owner of the console?

If I were you, i'd risk it x) it looks like is worth it. But hey... if you want to support sony (lol) go ahead and buy a new one. Go safe

Buy a new one. Show Sony your support! I would go with the slim. 120GB for only $299.99.

Hmm looks like someone wants to bankrupt Sony

Lol, my thoughts exactly. Sony losses money for every system sold so if you can find a good condition used system go for it. Bestbuy, Gamestop, Frys (Not sure if where you are from has this store), and other places have refurbished systems that are great. I'd say go with those and then use the extra money to get a warranty with it or something. All the models are great though, I just don't reccomend geting a 60 GB since they are very old and will probably break on you soon after your purchase. I think a Sony Refurbished 40GB starts at $229 and you can easily snag a hard drive with the extra cash you save. Goodluck on making your decision and I hope you enjoy your PS3 experience.

BTW, if you have a Costco where you are at, they have a PS3 Slim with the blu-ray remote and Uncharted for equal price.

I guess you don't have any of the stores I mentioned... Lol.
