It does seem like a title Nintendo is backing in many ways. It's so strange to see it not even on the preorder lists...

Yeah, these are big incentives.  Vesepria had a TON of new content, especially compared to other high profile late 360 to PS3 ports (Star Ocean, Trusty Bell, Lost Planet, etc).  It's more like RR6 to RR7, which again did better.

I also think Vesperia had an almost perfect release timeframe, coming pretty soon after the slim launch and rode it's momentum well.  Had it released earlier than the slim or closer to FFXIII, I sort of think it may not have done quite as well.

Yeah, it really was.  It was almost like the Valkyria BEST reprint in that, I think PS3 (and PSP) seem to have a pretty strong anime fan crossover market, proportionately stronger than DS/Wii.  It's kinda weird, as GameCube had a weirdly strong crossover market last gen (and Naruto games that could sell 300-400k).
