Are Gen Y too lazy too work?

Yeah it is so true. They are so lazy 35 48.61%

No its a lie. We work hard. Honest. 37 51.39%

Total:72

Am I the laziest member of Gen Y?
I have not really been looking for a job in 5 years and have just bludged off the welfare system.

My resume is a web of lies that I change regularly, making up more fake work experience, trying to con my way into an interview. Why? I have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

If I told the truth, I have not worked in 5 years. I would never get an interview, let alone a job.

So a uni degree + 5 years of no work. I am basically a lost cause. I do not accept that!!!

Oh also if there weren't unions workers would work harder.

Are you kidding me?  If it weren't for unions we'd still be putting 12 year olds in factories and chaining them to the machines for 14 hour work days 6 days a week.  The first unions were hereoes who fought for worker's rights... TO THE DEATH.  Factory owners shot them all the time.  If you're working less than 80 hours a week, you have unions to thank.

Unions suck ass dude. They make it near impossible to fire employees even if they are the laziest not hard working idiots on the planet, and they can go on strike whenever they feel they need a raise. Unions are a nightmare for business owners.

You cannot apply things like this to everyone- it isn't fair.

And wouldn't this stuff be a result of how Gen X raised their children? I don't know. I'm from the swan song year (1992) of this supposed Gen Y, and I think this is pretty uncalled for.

How is it my fault if my parents are overprotective?

That statement may fill out one of those Gen Y bullet points on not taking responsibility, but who your parents are is something you can never control.

Both are correct, though.

Unions were initially great causes - worker conditions were atrocious in mines and gas fields during the early part of the 1900's. Unions really helped them out.

However, as unions grew and became more commonplace, they began to wield too much power, which has caused many problems in the past few decades.

So its a mixed blessing. Unions have done a lot of good, but a lot of bad too.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Unions don't suck ass, neither are they the greatest things ever. They are one of those things where it is essential to find middle ground.

If you have no unions then you will find extremely poor working conditions would arise in no time; but if you have too powerful unions you will find that that business operations become pretty inefficient and other problems would develop.

Unions are an essential thing is modern society. But like Highwaystar said, we need to find a middle ground.

The day we threw away our middle ground, this country died.

I don't see any group as being lazy. However I will say this, its probable that my generation (1985) is confused by the sheer number of competing options. In addition to this, people are being told that the money they earn is relative to the value they are as a person, money is a status symbol. I don't have a problem with people earning more money, I have a problem with people being told the money they earn is the value of their existance.

The finance sector is stupid, and thats a generation X phenomenom. Since when is it sustainable to have a price/earnings ratio higher than prior to the great depression?Thankfully we're lower now but its just going to climb back up in a couple of years when people forget about the problems. Yah, great for retirement right? Except theres no real money in the stock market, not many companies raise money there either and yet people are being told to invest? Bah! Its just one big baseball card trading scam.

So who is really going to foot the bill for their retirement? Well considering the savings schemes being put into place, its the Generation Y and later people. We put money it, they take money out... Great! Its just one big money transfer. Its taxation to fund retirement under another name all in the name of a big pyramid scheme which people hope will never fall over, so long as there are more people to foot the bill than there are taking money out.

Tease.

Well put.

I totally agree initially they were needed to protect workers; but nowadays, as stickball said, they are just too powerful and they abuse their powers. Eg. Their ability to go on strike whenever they want. I don't know if it was Ontario-wide or just in my City but from Summer 2009 to A month or two ago the people who do the driving tests (so people can get drivers licenses) went on strike and it inconvenienced tons of people. And of course they wanted pay increase and more time off.

The insanely overpriced nature of (most) assets today has far more to do with the Baby-Boomers than it does with Generation X. For decades, Baby Boomers were lied to and told that certain investments were (essentially) perfectly safe and everyone has directed their money towards these investments; and this herd mentality has resulted in these investments becoming remarkably over-valued. Over the next couple of decades, as Baby Boomers begin to pull more heavily on their investments to sustain their lifestyle, the herd mentality will operate in the opposite way pushing the values of investments down very rapidly.

Hmm... talking about strikes, in my country austria, the last strike we had was a one day teachers strike. Okay, we don't strike often over here (see our statistic), but we have a good working union and so called "Sozialpartner", supporting each side, industry and workers, to balance out the unions and the bigger companies powers.
