Forums - Gaming Discussion - Pachter EA Makes Games "People Don't Want"

I never understand why so many people just see the name Pachter come into threads and hate on him without reading what he said. He's right, EA are making a lot of new IPs and taking a lot of chances but from a finance point of view they're doing terrible

EA's problems are multi-faceted.

New IPs that don't capture the gamers' imagination, even if done well (e.g., Saboteur on PS3/Xbox 360).
New IPs that don't make any sense once you play them (e.g., Ninja Reflex on Wii).
New IPs that are copies of existing successful games and not done well (e.g., Dante's Inferno on PS3/Xbox 360).
Misuse of existing IPs (Dead Space Extraction on Wii).
Annual minor revisions (virtually all sports games every year on all systems)

But I will still take them over Activision because at least EA tries new IPs while Activision dumps anything from which it cannot get multiple sequels (in other words, game series or bust for Activision).

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

Quality and "original" are two attributes, in and of themselves, that don't mean squat as far as entertaining people.  Core gamers can whine for more and more in this direction.  It doesn't mean the games will sell well, or be relevant to everyone.  Original is useful for novelty.  However, quality is only useful when the end product intrinsically is something people want to play.

Gamers say they want original IP's, but hardly support any new IP's.

Gamers want quality games that will entertain.  Borderlands is doing well at this point, and I believe is profitable, because it does what gamers want, and does it reasonably well, and does stuff that is new that fits into a niche that is underserved.  Just because a company pumps out an new IP, that doesn't mean that gamers will jump all over it.  Why should they?

EA do have marketing issues that need to be fixed. Why did they think it was a good idea to release Brutal Legend the same day as Uncharted 2? BL is still selling decently enough to get a sequel but I think EA were expecting a little more from it in terms of sales. Also, why did Schafer think it was a good idea to make an RTS element in a console game? They aren't bad by no means but it is understandable why people were turned off by it.

Michael Patcher is that kid in junior high school that has every system, gets almost every game, only opens 2 of them, thinks he knows more than anyone else, if you mention a game he buys it just to say that he has it,..... but....... has never ever ever, finished any of his games, and he's met Cliff Blezinski, Miyamoto, that guy that made god of war, has a signed photo that he lost in his closet. he has a sega genesis even though he is only twelve. wears video game t-shirts,............. oh yea, and everyone hates him!

The first part sounds like a kid at my school.
