Forums - Nintendo Discussion - BIG RUMOR: Ubisoft involved with Nintendo's new platform?

February 5, 2010 by The News Team Filed Under: Rumors, Nintendo in general
A rumor within a rumor...you have to love it!

Okay, there's a bunch of avenues to cover on this one, so stick with me. Ubisoft Brand Manager Leon Winkler joined up over at the Wii-DS.nl forums in order to do a little Q&A about Red Steel 2. Those questions have come and gone, and Leon has since stuck around on those forums to chat up various topics. Today, Leon was asked this question by another forum-goer.

"Oh, and Leon, did you already hear about the juicy rumor regarding Nintendo revealing a 'new platform' on the GDC 2010? The DS2 doesn't seem too obvious since the DSi XL is going to be released soon. Most of the signs point at a revamp of the current Wii (WiiHD anyone?). It seems to be leaked by an 'employee of a big international publisher'. Are you that employee by any chance, Leon?"

To which, Leon responded with this...

"I only leak when I go to the toilet. I do know it, but I'm not going to tell it MWOAAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Have fun speculating :D!"

Now, here's the question. Does Mr. Winkler know about the Nintendo rumored announcement, or is he talked about the Ubisoft announcement coming next week? Are the announcements related to one another? I don't know the answers, but this conversation certainly points to something interesting! Huge thank-you to Zelos for the info and translations!

What do you think? Could this be true? The guy told us to have fun speculating, so that means there's something there and it's not just pure rumor. WiiHD? lol, probably DS2, or perhaps a 3rd console?

Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

I sure hope Ubisoft won't be involved. They would just spam it to death with shovelware.

I LOVE ICELAND!

I think it would be obvious. All the major publishers would be aware of what's going on, though that's all heavily clouded by NDAs, and the propensity of jackasses to dilute the information so that any real leaks are treated the same as rumor

Certainly Ubisoft is aware of Nintendo 6th, Nintendo Handheld 5, Xbox 3, Playstation 4, and PSP2, but that doesn't have to lead to anything.

Though a new Nintendo handheld in 2010 would explain a lot of things.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Despite all the rumourmongering about a WiiHD, I've got to think the obvious choice would be a DS2. DS has already passed saturation point in Japan and they're basically just getting people to upgrade to newer models/colours to maintain sales. But that can't last forever. Japan needs a new portable by the end of 2010 or sales will really start falling. I'd also expect Japan at least to be getting a PSP2 this year as well.

A revision of the Wii isn't out of the question entirely, and a dvd-upgrading Wii HD is a possibility I suppose as long as it's 100% compatible with current Wii games. It would also allow Nintendo to build WM+ right in to those systems as well. WSR could be the pack-in with Wii Sports sold independantly for $30. Hmmm.... Zelda HD? But still, I doubt it.

Probably a DS replacement. There are rumours of them using Tegra 2 from Nvidia for both the graphics and CPU components. They typically release a handheld, what? A year or two before they release a new home console?

Do you know what its like to live on the far side of Uranus?

I personally believe that there will be a DS2 announced this year, that will launch at least in Japan at the end of the year.

The DSi XL does not rule out a DS2. The former is a very minor enhancement, it's closer to a PS2->slim than a DS->DSi change. It's to help the DS reach further, and the announcement of a DS2 (which probably won't have the giant screens) wouldn't impact much on DS1 XL.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

I'm guessing the guy doesn't know a thing.

Didn't Ubisoft state they weren't getting involved with the Wii for a while? That they are moving to projects for Xbox and PS3? Correct me if i'm wrong.

Thinking about it, new HW doesn't rule out anything that's not a console, so I think they might want to focus on the Wii Vitality Sensor at GDC if they plan on releasing a Wii Vitality game right after E3, hype needs to build up.

Of course, last year they didn't even show WM+ at all, so this will be a wait and see scenario.

But I still believe DS2 will be announced this year.
