That's what I thought. Maybe they sent him back a non BC 80GB because they do have those available and they didn't check first.

In my case there are no non BC 60GB models.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

If my 60GB ever does happen to kick the bucket Sony would need to send me back a 60GB with BC right?

Nope.  They send you back new models without BC.  Hence why i'd get mine fixed myself.

It happened to a friend of a coworker who was confused why his PS3 didn't have BC anymore after he got it back from Sony.

He had an old 80 gig and it got replaced with a new 80 gig.

That's legal? O_o

How could they send you back something with less options than the one you sent to them for repairs?

Well they give you the option.

They said they couldn't fix it but could send him back a "new one" or send back his old one.  He didn't know what a "new" 80 GB playstation meant.

Being normal and being done with all PS3 console news after he had the PS3 console.

If they've really started giving back refurbished models of what you had though... that's great.

Though I doubt they have any refurbished 20 gigs.

Probably close to 100% eventually. The solder used in early Xbox 360s and early PS3s was no good. Its not a matter of if, but when they will fail. In addition to this the thermal compound will probably dry up and become ineffective at some point which adds to the problem.

Do you know what its like to live on the far side of Uranus?

I have had my MGS4 80gb ps3 for almost 2 years now and i have had no problems. When i insert a disk the pas3 makes a small noise because it is reading the disc as answered on another forum. However i keep reading online that the ps3 blu ray drive and laser usually fail many people keep saying that sony charges 150 dollars for it to get repaired. I ahve a warranty with bestbuy but i like my 80gb since it has a memory card reader and some backwards compatibility. Anyways should i be worried?

I haven't heard anything that bad about PS3's disk drives.

I've got a launch 20 gig and it's still runnin.

If it breaks... I'll prolly try and fix it myself before i pay sony honestly.  Needs my BC.

I wouldn't stress about it though...

I don't think there is reason to worry... and even if there is... why bother?  It won't do you any good anyway.

I successfully repaired my Ps3's disc drive today. It is simple and easy. I accidentally ripped off the clip from the old laser though so I wasn't able to send it in for a rebate but whatever it was only for like 5 dollars anyway.

Why worry about it. If it fails it fails and besides you said you had a warranty. The only thing you are doing is giving yourself high blood pressure.

it was mainly a problem with early 40gb lens.

they went for cheaper blu ray diodes, but improved later on.

they won't fail as much as DVD lens, it's a common problem with lens based systems.

wii 360, notebooks are prone to it.

Recently I've been hearing about of 60GBs and the MGS 80GBs breaking. Not so much for the non BC consoles. Maybe Sony actually removed it because it was causing problems and they didn't want to tell anyone that the BC was screwing up.
