Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Mario Galaxy 2 is out Dec 31st. Can it qualify for Game of the Year 2011?

Huh? No way Nintendo would release that game on December 31st.

Odd. Future. Wolf. Gang. Kill. Em. All. OFWGKTA Don't give a fuck!

Fuck Steve Harvey. FREE EARL!

Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be the GREATEST game EVER made!!!

I'd take a bullet for Square-Enix!

Most big sites would probably get it soon enough that it would still count for 2010. Other sites it would not get any chance because it isn't soon enough to be counted in their 2010 awards but won't be allowed into the 2011 awards because it technically released in 2010. And obviously some sites would just toss it into the 2011 games.

And if it by some miracle did, they wouldn't announce that date now.

And even if they did, and it did manage to get nominated for GOTY 2011...there's no way it would win that long after it came out.

Oh, I wouldn't say that. I don't think games have to be fresh in your memory for them to count for GOTY material. I'm sure Mass Effect 2 will get tons of recognition 10 months from now, for example, when the time comes for GOTY 2010.

I don't think it will get as much as it could have. It'll get recognition, but the gaming media has very short-term memories, so it'll be harder for Mass Effect 2 to retain the critical mass of hype needed to swing GOTY awards, especially compared to whatever heavy-hitters the industry has in store for the latter half of the year. Not that those games will necessarily be better, but they will be better appraised in the final tally, comparatively.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Yeah, that's clearly a place holder.

However, in the really odd event it did release on the 31st, I would say sure why not?

Doubt it. Just look at the last several years of gaming and you'll see that most games that win GOTY come from the latter half of the year. If Galaxy were to release on New Years Eve, it would have to fend off other games for 12 months in order to take that title. As redicolous as that is it's true. Even a game like Final Fantasy XIII or God of War 3, releasing in March, will have much less of a crack at GOTY then games coming later on in the year.

I hate how it's like that but unfortunately that's how gaming media works right now.

LOL, no way is Nintendo going to launch a game on new year's eve.

Correct, they would more likely launch it to compete with Jesus, on Christmas Eve.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

There is no way with so much development time under it's belt and so much time still left to go Nintendo would resign themselves to only being able to release the game on the 31st. If their current development timeline pointed to an end of year finish they could just hire a few extra people to ensure they could get the game finished a few weeks earlier.

Yes, 2011.
