Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Anyone notice mutliplat. Wii games have different boxart.

Question, does everyone know how long it takes for the Earth to orbit the sun? There's a Gallup poll that shows 18% of Americans think it doesn't orbit the sun at all, and a slightly higher percentage than that think that it takes 1 month in Europe according to a Eurobarometer poll. Do you think that everyone knows who George Washington was?

You'd think highschoolers should be old enough to know who the first president of the US is, yet they don't.

"Everyone knows" is something that's very easy to say, it's known as the "curse of knowledge". We always assume that things that seem like basic knowledge, is known to everyone or almost everyone. It's not actually true, you'd be shocked how many educated people I've asked "is Africa a continent or a country" who answered "country". If they don't have an interest, it's quite probable that many people wouldn't associate Tiger Woods with golf on a glance at a box among many on a shelf, who might at least have to think a bit to recognize who he was.

Fortunately the curse of knowledge is something that marketers are taught to take into account.

Those things are fundamentally simple facts but people don't know them. However, they are non-relative facts. They have nothing to do with people's lives on a daily basis.
Tiger Woods is pop culture.

There have been tons of articles talking about how more people know paula abdul than the vice president. That's because one is pop culture and the other is not.
It's also been shown that while a large amount of people who don't graduate from college or high school don't know things we consider basic, like how many continents there are or where a country is located, they often know more about things that direclty matter to the general public on a daily basis.

Exactly, and so, does golf matter to everyone on a daily basis? It's not quite the same as music...

I don't think actual golf matters as much to people, but I think a lot of people who play wii like the golf games. Golf is actually quite fun, it's just that the initial cost is so great that not many can afford it. You need a golf course, and clubs and balls, and all of those are pretty expensive and courses that are open to the public are actually hard to find.
However, because of wii sports, I think a lot of people have found enjoyment in the game. It is easily my favorite, and everyone I know that owns a wii also owns tiger woods golf.
Just look at the sales of the game. Golf games are very popular.
Plus, it's not just golf though. Tiger woods transcends golf. I read something in the local paper at least once or twice a week about tiger. He has been compared with Michael Jordan, and at the moment, is the second greatest sports athlete just behind tennis pro andre agassi.

The only Wii games I have which have 'different' box art is LEGO Star Wars Complete and The Simpsons Game. Even considering my other multi-platform games like LEGO Batman, Metal Slug Anth. and Pinball Hall of Fame, they have the same covers. I don't see how they're marketed towards kids at all, aside from the games which are already targeting kids.

The simpsons game has a different cover for every platform

I'm pretty sure the lego star wars complete is the same on all systems.

As I stated, the Simpsons Game is one of the two games I have that actually has a different cover.  And I only mentioned LEGO Star Wars because they put a Yellow Spine on the Wii version (some people make a fuss about different colored spines for Wii games).

oh i see. I thought you were saying that the wii cover was different particularly. I guess I didn't put 2 and 2 together when you said "I don't think it has anything to do with marketing to kids"
