Those things are fundamentally simple facts but people don't know them. However, they are non-relative facts. They have nothing to do with people's lives on a daily basis.

There have been tons of articles talking about how more people know paula abdul than the vice president. That's because one is pop culture and the other is not.
It's also been shown that while a large amount of people who don't graduate from college or high school don't know things we consider basic, like how many continents there are or where a country is located, they often know more about things that direclty matter to the general public on a daily basis.
