Forums - Sony - PlayStation 3 Brand now profitable, Console still losing moeny

Well if It's Kaz saying it then he's probably correct.

But can they still be profitable at $300? I guess so.

It's just that simple.

of course they continue to lose money, the only model of PS3 currently selling is the Phat PS3, this question should be asked again once the PS3 slim has been on the market for a solid month or two.

Also, do we know yet if the Cell chip is 45nm in the Slim?

Or is that YET to be used?

So the amount they loose on the hardware must not be very much if they are making a profit on the entire PlayStation Brand. Well at least that Sony shareholder on here cant bitch anymore since Sony is now making a profit from its games division.

Really?

Losses on PS3 hardware verses...

- Profit on PS3 games

- Profit on PS3 peripherals

- Profit on PSP hardware(maybe...)

- Profit on PSP games

- Profit on PSP peripherals

- Profit on PS2 hardware

- Profit on PS2 games

- Profit on PS2 periperals

hmm...

fixed. Ps2 doesnt sell nearly as much games since there is a huge used market for it. Also with periphrials. How come psp sw is all of a sudden profitable? i thought general thought on this matter was piracy kills profits. And you really don't know what Psp sells for. I find it hard to believe it will cost less than 135 to make one of those things. Also, with ps2 price cut I don't see them making more than 10 dollars per unit sold.

We know that Sony is already making profit on their PSP-3000 models. We also know that the PSPgo will be cheaper to make then the PSP 3000 but will sell for more. While piracy does kill the numbers on PSP games a lot of the more high-profile ones do sell quite a bit and do make Sony some money. Not sure if its enough to call them profitable in that area though.

Yeah, I had a memory relapse with the PSP I thought it sold for 150 but then remembered it was 170. And you have no clue that it will be cheaper to make PSP GO! ...it actually very well be more expensive and less profitable for Sony on the HW front. Which, that doesn't matter since it is just causing sony losses right now since it is in production but not bringing in revenue.

Well I remember hearing during one of Gametrailers Bonus Round that since Sony is getting rid of the UMD drive and Format, Included a smaller screen and overall system that it turns out to be cheaper to make. Now Im not sure how true this is since it came out of Patcher's mouth but the other people on Bonus Round seem to agree with him in that aspect. Just something to take into consideration really

Black Women Are The Most Beautiful Women On The Planet.

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

They are replacing the UMD drive with more expensive flash memory. Then they are bribing the retailers to carry the PSP Go! with giving them a lot more money on every unit sold than normal since Sony will be cutting into their SW profits.

It states in the article that the Cell and RSX were shrunk, so I'm guessing they are now at 45nm each.

EDIT:  Ok it didn't state that in this article.  It stated it in the article about the 250GB Slim.

Destroyer - Nice observation.

Carl - Well... Reports a while back said they'll be moving to the 45nm in the fall. I'd find it hard to believe that they'd put the 65nm in it just to change it again immediatly.

So why did Sony lose $300M last quarter if they were making PS3 Slims all the while?

You answered your question... LOL.
