The question on everyone’s mind: will there be an MLB season next year with the current CBA expiring on Dec 1, 2026? And will the owners still fight for a salary cap despite the parity this playoffs?
Now that the Dodgers got swept by a team with a third their salary and denied the 3peat (thanks, Brewers), the owners will likely ease up on a cap (that’ll 100% cause a lockout if they fight for it, just ask the NHL how that worked for saving the ‘04 season) in hopes of saving the season, but I don’t think it’ll matter. Next season will be wiped at least in part with or without a salary cap (there might not be a season at all next year), though without the push for a cap, a new CBA deal will probably get done faster.
At least that was the hope for many fans in seeing the Dodgers lose the 2026 NLCS (besides the obvious). If they made (or God forbid, won) a third straight World Series, I guarantee that would be what finally pushes the league to (adamantly) fight for a salary cap (and be the last professional sports league to do so) in the ongoing CBA negotiations to appease (rightfully) disgruntled fans and the MLBPA would (of course) tell them “hell no” every step of the way and not budge until at least the start of next season was about to be gone. It would be the 2004 NHL CBA/salary cap fuckhole all over again.
