Forums - Gaming - Valve raises price of Steam Deck to $789/$949 for 512gb/1tb models

Valve has just risen the price of its steam deck. 512gb has increased from $549 to $789. 1tb has increased from $649 to $949. A huge almost 50% increase. With these extremely high prices for old tech, well that Steam Machine price isn't going to be cheap when it's finally revealed.

If they're charging $949 for an old Zen2/RDNA2 low powered handheld like this. The 2TB steam machine with an extra 8gb of VRAM on top of the 16gb system ram is going to cost a bomb.

RIP the Steam Machine then. Bad time to be in the computing tech market.

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

Holy shit that costs more than my Xbox Ally X that I bought a few months ago. A brand new Xbox Ally X costs $1000 in the US, who is gonna buy the Steam Deck at that price lmao.

You had such a good streak going Valve but this is just nuts!!!! This makes the Switch 2s price increase look like the deal of the century.

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

That is insane. How can they possibly justify that much of an increase.

Funny that the Xbox Ally X was mocked for its price point but currently is the best value pc handheld (without going pre-owned).

But that $999 won't last long. You can still pick up Z1E Ally's for £300-£350 on the used market in the UK which is crazy good value now.

Absolutely insane a 1TB steam deck now costs more than a PS5 Pro. I know valve don't subsidise but damn.

I didn't even know it went up from the initial launch prices. It's in hyper-niche territory now. PS5 Pro only sells to 3% of Playstation fans. I would expect Steam Deck sales figures to be 1.5% of PC Gamers and Switch gamers combined.

And here I was remembering back when people were up-in-arms over the $700USD PS5 Pro and $450USD Switch 2. Now we've got a handheld selling for more than both! Oof.

Not great sign for the industry, but also a very predictable situation. The games industry — specifically hardware developers — will really need to come to their senses these next few years if they don't want to see a crash. I see no future where gaming continue to grow when the entry point for a 4 year old handheld is $789USD.

I'm so happy to have purchased both the Switch 2 and the Deck when they launched. The prices are getting absolutely ridiculous...

Are they fucking out of their minds?
