Forums - Indie - So, I'm currently making a mobile game

This is more like an experience so far in a nutshell from what I've learned, I hope it's useful to someone - and discussion is always welcome.

A project that's been going for 9 years already and finally it seems to advance, thanks to generative AI that I'm able to use in programming.

Things I've learned during the years is, that the most important aspect of any project is to have the right people with you. If you don't, running the project is a full-time job - or two, because you virtually need to guide others by hand, otherwise nothing is going to happen because of the lack of commitment. Or, they have hard time to do what was agreed upon because they have "better" ideas on their own and they're constantly changing or try to change what they were supposed to do and try to meddle with what others do.

There's many (especially younger) people who are into creating games for fun, but when there's a chance to earn some money, they're not interested. Then there are people who want to get a role in an AAA budget games, but being in charge of a smaller project is hard pill to swallow. And when you get the wrong person, it's going to delay your project for six months anyway. And also, when there's one who can't get his or her job done, nobody else will.

Right now, it seems that our projects are taking huge steps and the friend I originally started the project with has also got a lot of done these last few days. And we already have lots of assets made during the years. Right now it seems that we get a lot more stuff than originally thought into the game because of how fast we've got everything done.

Using generative AI to program isn't as simple as you might think based on what media tells you, it does speed it up hugely, it can write hundreds of lines in seconds and can debug the code pretty quickly, but you still need to know what ask it to do. Because if you don't, you're ending with telling the AI that shooting yourself on the foot, as the AI suggested, hurt, the AI tells you that while you can shoot yourself on the foot, as suggested, it's not recommended because of the damage it causes. And so you end up with rewriting the code ten times before the AI gets it right. And it's not going to fix bad game design anyway.

Most of the work seem to start when the game seems ready, because there's lots of tweaking to do with details and getting everything to work right. Maybe a sound effect is one tenth of a second off and it needs editing. Is the score system fair. What size are the on-screen buttons.
