Which of these 2 16-bit crossover side scrollers was better: Battletoads & Double Dragon, one of, if not the first crossover game ever or the game that crossed over two 80’s futuristic cyborg movie franchises that amazingly never met on the big screen despite already having a crossover comic: RoboCop vs. The Terminator (funnily enough, I actually happen to be watching OG Terminator right now as I type this)?
As for having the 4 different console ports as options while asking which was the better game, basically: if you think Battletoads & Double Dragon was the better game, you vote for which console version you prefer, be it the Genesis or SNES version. Or vice versa, though it should be worth noting that both console versions of BT&DD are essentially the same game with some presentation and music differences (or additions/subtractions) between the two versions whereas the two console versions of RoboCop vs. The Terminator are wildly different.
As for the topic at hand, tough call, Battletoads & Double Dragon definitely has more movement variety. While RoboCop vs. Terminator has a bunch of different and unique paths in each of its levels and they’re all well-detailed, they’re all traversed one way whereas Battletoads & Double Dragon has arcade and side-scrolling levels and even waterboarding.
However, gameplay variety and quality definitely goes to RoboCop vs. Terminator with its wide variety of weapons to choose from. The Toads and Dragons in BT&DD sinfully play the same with little gameplay variety separating the two and Rare didn’t have the courtesy to give the Dragons their signature spin kicks. I almost feel compelled to DQ it for that alone. The presence of co-op (which RoboCop vs. Terminator lacks) almost makes up for this, but the cheap level design later on in the game can actually make it worse in 2P and not better.
RoboCop vs. The Terminator has the overall more memorable boss fights (though both opening boss fights are laughably bad, you can literally duck below fucking bullets from Arnie, ‘nuf ‘sed) and levels, so I’d have to give it the edge. Both games are classic crossovers, but I’d say RoboCop vs. The Terminator just beats it out. As for which version, I like the Genesis version the best.
One thing I or anybody can’t take away from BT&DD, though: it has the most kickass intro theme ever.
