PS5 Remains Best-Seller - Europe Hardware Estimates for January 2026

The PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console in Europe with 265,302 units sold for January 2026, according to VGChartz estimates. The PS5 has sold 31.98 million units lifetime. 

The Nintendo Switch 2 was the second best-selling console with an estimated 156,900 units sold to bring lifetime sales to 3.75 million units. The Nintendo Switch 1 was the third best-selling console with an estimated 36,063 units sold to bring lifetime sales to 39.64 million units. The Xbox Series X|S came in fourth place with 19,680 units sold to bring its lifetime sales to 8.52 million units.

Switch 2 sales compared to the same month for the Switch 1 in 2018 are down by over 95,000 units as the Switch 1 sold 252,266 units in Europe in January 2018.

PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2019 are down by over 141,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are down by over 91,000 units. PS4 sold 406,446 units for the month of January 2019 and Xbox One sales were at 110,785 units.

PlayStation 5 sales compared to the same month a year ago are down by 10,834 (-3.9%). Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 27,202 units (-58.0%) and Nintendo Switch 1 sales are down by 70,065 units (-66.0%).

Looking at sales month-on-month, PlayStation 5 sales are down by nearly 1.12 million units, Switch 2 sales are down by over 0.75 million units, Xbox Series X|S sales are down by over 62,000 units, and Nintendo Switch 1 sales are down by over 179,000 units.

PS5 Best-Seller as Sales Drop - Americas Hardware Estimates for January 2026

The PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console in the Americas (USA, Canada, & Latin America) with 240,901 units sold for January 2026, according to VGChartz estimates. The PS5 has sold 35.25 million units lifetime.

The Nintendo Switch 2 was the second best-selling console with an estimated 225,035 units sold to bring lifetime sales to 5.67 million units. The Xbox Series X|S came in third place with 90,078 units sold to bring its lifetime sales to 21.34 million units. The Nintendo Switch was the fourth best-selling console with an estimated 41,974 units sold to bring lifetime sales to 58.84 million units.

Switch 2 sales compared to the same month for the Switch 1 in 2017 are down by over 71,000 units as the Switch 1 sold 296,100 units in the Americas in January 2018.

PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2018 are up by over 5,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are down by over 121,000 units. PS4 sold 235,434 units for the month of January 2019 and Xbox One sales were at 211,095 units.

PlayStation 5 sales compared to the same month a year ago are down by 68,866 (-22.2%). Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 62,464 units (-41.0%) and Nintendo Switch 1 sales are down by 124,247 units (-74.8%).

Looking at sales month-on-month, Nintendo Switch 2 sales are down by nearly 1.03 million units, PlayStation 5 sales are down by nearly 0.99 million units, Xbox Series X|S sales are down by nearly 242,000 units, and Nintendo Switch 1 sales are down by over 272,000 units.

Switch 2 Continues to Dominate - Japan Hardware Estimates for January 2026

The Nintendo Switch 2 was the best-selling console in Japan with 315,816 units sold for January 2026, according to VGChartz estimates. The Nintendo Switch 2 has now sold an estimated 4.42 million units lifetime.

The Nintendo Switch 1 sold an estimated 75,012 units to bring its lifetime sales to 36.58 million units. The PlayStation 5 sold an estimated 42,929 units to bring its lifetime sales to 7.37 million units. The Xbox Series X|S sold 1,711 units to bring their lifetime sales to 0.69 million units.

Switch 2 sales compared to the same month for the Switch 1 in 2017 are up by nearly 30,000 units as the Switch 1 sold 286,202 units in Japan in January 2018.

PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2018 are down by over 163,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are up by over 1,000 units. PS4 sold 206,283 units for the month of January 2019 and Xbox One sales were at 459 units.

Nintendo Switch 1 sales compared to the same month a year ago are down by 120,104 units (-61.6%). PlayStation 5 sales are down by 4,879 (-10.2%) and Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 4,125 units (-70.7%).

Looking at sales month-on-month, Nintendo Switch 2 sales are down by nearly 767,000 units, Nintendo Switch 1 sales are down by over 109,000 units, PlayStation 5 sales are down by nearly 71,000 units, and Xbox Series X|S sales are up by over 600 units.

2026 Japan Sales Comparison Charts Through January - Switch 2 vs PS5 vs Xbox Series vs Switch

Here we see data representing the sales through to consumers and change in sales performance of the four platforms still on the market (Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 1) over comparable periods for 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026. Also shown is the market share for each of the consoles over the same periods.
