ROM keys have apparently leaked online that could constitute a hardware-level exploit that would allow users to run custom firmware on PS5, opening the way to hacks and pirated games.

It will still take years and years of development for that to work though right?
So its not really a issue here and now for sony.

I don't think it'll take that long. But it's not really a massive issue. Basically every console has been blown open for piracy at some point.

This happens all the time for all consoles, those crazy hackers just never give up eh? They need to find a better hobby like hack into corrupt criminal corps and fook then up instead (mainly usa corps)

Game preservation is good, but piracy during the current generation is not. That said, I’m hopeful this won’t mean having (e.g.) GoW:Ragnörak easily pirated before the time PS6 comes around.

Well, it's already easily pirated on PC anyway lol.

Oh lol. Well… I guess that’s a bit unfortunate. Though I’d imagine the pirated games aren’t running quite on par with the experienced you’d see from a legally purchased copy, no?

It's slightly more work to download and install than just clicking a button on steam, and you won't have achievements, but other than that the performance of the pirated version will be the same. In some cases pirated games actually perform slightly better due to the removal of DRM like Denuvo which can have an impact.

At the end of the day you're not going to stop Piracy, and almost every console and game ever released has been pirated. Switch games were getting pirated (sometimes days before they even released) but that didn't stop the games selling. That anyone with a modern PC could emulate switch too didn't stop it selling over 150m units.

Piracy is inevitable.

This could lead to PS5 emulation down the line right?

So its probably not a bad thing.... I honestly think emulation is "good" thing for game preservation in the long run.
Like stated before though, I think it has to happen well after a generation is over, so it doesn't impact the console makers though.

I think the hassle of it all, makes it not worth it alone.
Last time I played a pirated game I think I was in high school.
Once you have money to spend on your hobby, its just a much better option to buy things.
Plus I like collecting games on steam (not to mention Epic games store giving away free games, and how big the Free to play model is now).

If I don't think a game is worth its price, I'll just wait it out (for a sale) or just ignore it.

Steam really put a huge dent in piracy I think.
I don't know anyone that pirates games anymore either.
Which is weird, because back in the school-high school days, most of my friends and I did.
(granted we didn't have any money to spend back then either)

I think piracy is wildly overblown as a issue when it comes to games.
