Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony will no longer allow retailers to sell digital codes for games, add-on cards and PSN$ cards will remain

Seems like a good way to piss off retailers, who already hate the push for digital games as is.

This is the digital future, where the only place you can buy games is on the platform-holder's own storefront. There is no incentive for Sony, MS or Nintendo to sell these digital voucher codes anymore when physical is gone, Sony is only pulling the trigger early

Nothing to see here, move along

Thing is, this could bite them. The retailers could push back by putting less ads for Sony games both in-stores and on their websites, and maybe even giving Sony less shelf space.

Also, this a bad move since there is no way to gift digital games on PSN currently, the only way to do that before now was to buy the code at a retailer and them give it to whoever you wanted to gift the game to.

I usually buy my digital codes from other sites or ebay because they're cheaper than the official store...

Hopefully Microsoft doesn't follow Sony.

Of course. All things are falling into place. Yes, MS will follow.

seems like a good April 1st joke

I hope PC games does not follow this. There are some stores that likes to put some off season sales.

Pocky Lover Boy!

Sony please don't go back to your arrogant ways. This seems like a good way to piss off retailers.

Guuuuuuuuys, its like you have your heads buried in the sand. Why would SONY care about pissing retailers as we move towards a digital/streaming era? Gamespot is obsolete and will be no more by next gens end. Dont think that retailers will stop selling their consoles. No way. Hottest items year round. Honestly this only really hurts Gamespot.

Retailers sell consoles because they make the money on software sales.

Last year we had a thread about the Austrian retailer Gameware who stopped selling Xbox consoles after the announcement of Gamepass. They have no interest in selling a box that might not net them any money from software sales. They continue to sell Xbox games, but they leave it to other retailers to work with the very slim margins on console sales.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV (360+PS3) would outsell SSBB. I was wrong.
