Forums - Sales Discussion - WII U VS. GAMECUBE - CUMULATIVE SALES

That picture is the reason why I always wonder how people are surprised. Nintendo consoles have always been on a nice decline curve. Wii U isn't the anomaly, the Wii is.

And yet; there's no logic in releasing the NX as soon as possible.

Because it's a given the next system will perform better? I'm not sure if that is sarcasm or not, but it didn't seem to do it for SEGA. Why would it work for Nintendo. Releasing another mid-gen system is going to end up in failure once again... unless it has a gimick that appeals to the casual market.

Better to attempt with a product that might have a shot rather than continue pressing a product that already failed badly. There are no guarantees for the NX; but there is for the Wii U, we know it will never perform well or even make them any decent amount of money, so there's little sense in keeping it around much longer.

It's kind of like saying that cancer surgery is futile because there's no guarantee for survival; this makes little sense if you know you'll die without it.

You are assuming the NX will perform better or make them more money. I am not convinced that is the case.

In this case. To cure the cancer you have to hold on a bit longer till you can cure it. And they won't die by continuing for a couple of years so they can have a launch at the same time as the competitiors with an infrastructure and hardware to compete.

If the NX is a home console, i am convinced it will fail harder than the Wii U. Why would anyone buy it after beeing burned by the Wii U? Tell me wich audience is this that didnt buy the Wii U but will buy the NX, and wich audience is this that bought the Wii U and saw it end early and will jump on the NX? I would just like to see who are these mysterious audiences.

Few things to keep in mind.

Gamecube launched after the successful PS2 and had competition from the newly launched Xbox as well.
Wii U launched before both PS4 and XB1 were on the market, but off the back of a successful Wii. Wii U lost a lot of third party support early on before PS4/XB1 even.
Gamecube lost a lot of third party support after a couple or years or so.
Gamecube launched at $199 and was $99 after just 23 months (Hence the boost in sales then)
Wii U launched at $299, and outside of a couple of promotional offers, has never been less than that.

Here is a look at Nintendo Home Console Hardware & Software Sales from NES to Wii U.

Totally this.

The wii targeted the casual audience. That is the only way Nintendo will see another sucessful home console. These NX wishes are so misguided that i don't even know what to say. The dreams will be broken pretty fast. Very much like the Dreamcast.

To revert this situation requires alot of preparation and timing, and the timing isnt now. This gen is already lost, theres no getting it back when rivals have a head start of 20-30m and will deliver a new console in 3-5 years. The way to recover this is to be prepared to match and surpass the competition when the next gen comes.

GC is and always will be my favorite Nintendo console :)

Such a great system, Wii on the other hand... well, at least it gave me Xenoblade and The Last Story

To be fair, the GameCube was a great console that got a lot of really great games.

The Wii U...

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Thanks :)

I actually have my own blog at ZhugeEX.com so I end up posting most of my thoughts there.

Otherwise I'm active on Twitter a lot posting random stuff like the above

Just how the Wii-U looks in the retail space next to it's competitors......walk into any store that sells all 3 current consoles in the last year. Huge selection of games from Sony and MS. It's rather bulbous. The racks are long and thick for PS4 and XBO. The Wii-U rack is tiny and ineffectual, and at the Best Buy I go to, is bent slightly to the left. Some people will be turned off for these reasons alone.
