Seriously, I've been thinking about it for a while, and I can't even picture anything nearly as resilient as Sonic in the gaming world, maybe not even outside of it.

Sonic was once regarded as one of the biggest and most succesful characters figures ever in the gaming media, the one to go the closest to Mario, arguably the most succesful video game character ever, being its rival and making its company, SEGA, be as relevant as Nintendo back in the 4th generation, when Nintendo was the absolute king until them.

Sonic became a simbol of gaming, and seems like it won't ever stop being one, and boy SEGA has tried to kill the thing, bad game after bad game, horrible reception after horrible reception, Sonic has turned into Sanic, a former shadow of itself, specially from the golden Mega Drive era, but also specially after SEGA dropped console hardware development and went third party, its reputation and status just keep dropping and dropping, peaking the bad status with games that became notorious simbols of failure and mockery, as Sonic '06 and most recently Sonic Boom.

But even so, there are still people who believe in the damn thing, people like me, that every time gets dissapointed, even as it had some decently good entries here and there as well, as Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations, it's not even remotely close or worth of what Sonic was back in the day, but still, everytime I see SEGA say they are working on a new game I think this time will be different, this time they'll get it right, they can't fail again, can them? And the answer is almost always: Yes, they can.
So why do I, and some other people still believe on the blue hedgehog?

Even if you are not one of those people, if you dropped Sonic already, even as it has become a simbol of mockery and even as I mock it as well, there is no denying Sonic is still alive, because people like me, and they aren't that few at all, still actually believe on it.
Most recently SEGA has made a compromise to go back to how it once was, that it's aware of its problems and the fall of the brand and it's working to make up for it, and after the announcements of the comeback of Valkyria series, a highly regarded series for people who experienced the games, hope for the blue hedgehog started to grow on me as well. I actually didn't think they could make me believe again this time after the last main game... but they just did it.

Is it just pure good will of my and some of fans part? Vain and pure wishing? Nostalgia grab? I don't know, what I know is that I want a Sonic game to make me as happy to play as it once did, and I just can't let it go, and right now I'm already waiting for the new announcement, hoping it'll be a great game.

One thing I can say for sure, though, the fact Sonic failed so many times already and for so much time, it has been over 20 years from its golden age, 25 from the first release, and the fact the thing became a widely spread joke and it's actually still alive... I don't think any other characters could fail as bad for so many times and so many years down the road and still have any kind of fanbase and people who still believe in something from it. The thing just doesn't die no matter what happens.

Can you name any character nearly as resilient as Sonic?

If there was a man named Call of Duty, I'd name him just as resilient.

But in all seriousness, as someone who kinda hates Sonic, it is pretty impressive that he's still alive after catastrophes such as Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic 06, and Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric.

I guess it's cause games like the original triolgy on Genesis are just so iconic, Adventure 1 and 2 were pretty impressive at the time, and somewhat more recent games like Colors and generations got pretty good reception, with Generations being my fav Sonic game of all time, so whenever Sonic games are good, they stick out.

Also, the Sonic fanbase is easily one of the more crazier fanbase out there, and if the series were ever to be stopped, no doubt that there would be bloodshed throughout the entire internet.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

After all this years, it's still the face of Sega. And as long as Sega is around, it won't go away. Also, it has almost as much nostalgia-power as Mario.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

I agree.

I was shocked to find out that kids nowadays still know who Sonic is and still think he's the coolest. After so many bad games, going third party, and apparently becoming almost irrelevant, I would have thought kids today wouldn't give a crap, but they still do.

Yes. Heres why: Sonic is the only character who's game design is still his own. Where else can you find a game like Sonic?

Tons of mario clones
MegaMan clones
Castlevania clones

But how many Sonic clones? If you want high speed platforming Sonic is still the only place to get it. Thus his value is retained unlike something like all these shooters and open world games which all offer the same experience.

This.  It's amazing that Sonic just keeps going, and not in a fad way like Ninja Turtles do by poping up every 4 to 5 years just to go and die again for the same amount of time.

The fan base is utterly bananas and kids always like Sonic.  Also it might be something to do with how Sonic keeps changing in art style over the years.

I suppose he changes with the times and keeps finding a way to fit in and stay relevant.

Sony want to make money by selling art, Nintendo want to make money by selling fun, Microsoft want to make money.

Ehhh... I'll take Super Meat Boy any day if I want a high speed platformer.

And those kids never actually played the great games in their glory, and most likely can't experience it as well as we once it, as it was the high end stuff and nowdays it has to be taken as a retro game.
