Forums - Gaming Discussion - VR breakthrough by SMI takes eye-tracking to the next level for current hardware

Guys, this is some interesting tech stuff even if you are not interested in VR so I recommend reading

- SensoMotoric Instruments (SMI) has made possible VR to track saccadic eye movements to an acceptable level

- SMI worked with Sony on their InFamous eye-tracking demo at GDC 2014 when Project Morpheus was revealed

- this technology makes possible rendering 4k and above resolutions with current and and near-feature hardware

- what SMI's work makes possible for VR:

For those of you who aren’t jumping for joy already, foveated rendering is a big deal for virtual reality because it could enable us to create realistically rendered experiences using today’s GPU and CPU technology. Foveated rendering takes advantage of human vision to cut down on what actually needs to be rendered to the screen. When you look at an object only the center of your focus, where your eye’s fovea is, appears perfectly clear with the image getting progressively less so as it approaches your peripheral.

- people are already calling this for next gen VR

What do you guys think?

Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

Clever way to use far less processing power. might help lowering the price for VR devices

still I don't see VR taking off as Sony/MS hope it will :v

I think VR will be a part of the future, but I am not sure if VR's moment is now.

I bet VR will "take off" when you can do all this, somehow, without wearing a helment. People like practical things.

exactly, when this will be possible with some sort of device similar to the Kineckt/Wii sensor bar at an affordable price then it might take off, but still at that point games will lose immersiveness

I do think VR is the future but maybe this gen it will be similar to what online gaming was the first XBox and PS2 and Dreamcast .... where it was kind of a cool feature but not an integral thing and was kinda not ready for prime time. But PS3/360 definitely were online centric.

Yeah, foveated rendering seems to be the way to go for VR. Haven't heard for this one though, but FOVE VR piqued my interest.

It's possible, but I feel like I would need to try it out in order to know how it affects the immersion. I think there's a chance it could enhance it, even, specially when it comes to FPS.
