No, we get your point. It's right there in the OP. Your challenge to the notion was just very weak. This was a write off in a quarter where otherwise, MS would have had almost 5 billion in profit as far as I can tell.

endimion said: Just to be clear a write off is not a loss.... Just sayin... Comparing Sony and MS on a financial level is quite irrelevant... MS is financially a Behemoth next to Sony... |
Why is not a loss?
Good for Sony for getting the Playstation (console side anyway) back on track, but lets be honest ... they are smaaaaall potatoes compared to MS.
Sony are the guy who gambles on the regular tables in Vegas, Microsoft is the guy in the private V.I.P. area with the wallet to back it up with.
MSFT really taking a beating this month.
Open July 1 - $44.45
Close July 23 - $46.11
Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

Yep as I previously mentioned it was obvious it was just the usual market over reaction on the word loss without looking at real numbers. 2 days later the price is almost back to where they were as investors looked at the actual numbers. A lot of people preying on emotional traders would have made a fortune on MS in the last 3 days.
Looks like the OP jump to conclusion too early LOL, but I hope Microsoft's stock goes up to $58 like it was back in 1999.

Just to set the record straight for those here who clearly have no clue what writing off goodwill is. It most certainly IS a loss. Microsoft paid X billion dollars for Nokia, and a good portion of the acquisition went to the balance sheet account 'goodwill'. Now, Microsoft is saying that this balance sheet account, which they paid X billion dollars for, isn't actually worth X minus 7.4 billion dollars. In other words, $7.4 billion of money actually spent by Microsoft is worth absolutely nothing.
As a general rule, if you have no clue how GAAP accounting works (mandatory for SEC filings), you should probably avoid saying that a loss reported in GAAP isn't a true loss.
Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

Dang, take a business course or something. Again, they exceeded Revenue expectations by A LOT. Do you understand why this happened? I am assuming no, because you made this pointless thread.
