Hideo Kojima has been posting some interesting trivia giving insight into the development of previous Metal Gear Solid games. Translations once again by JunkerHQ.

  •  Kojima originally wanted Psycho Mantis to be able to see other company’s games as well on your memory card, but deals couldn’t be arranged. In the PlayStation version, Mantis can see it if you’ve played certain Konami games, Azure Dreams, Suikoden, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and Vandal Hearts, to be exact, and in the Japanese version also Policenauts and Snatcher. In The Twin Snakes, the 2004 remake published by Nintendo, he recognizes several Nintendo games: Super Mario Sunshine, The Legend of Zelda, The Wind Waker and Super Smash Brothers Melee, and Silicon Knight’s title Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem.

  • When Raiden has to navigate through Arsenal Gear in his birthday suit, originally it was the plan his privates could get exposed during combat depending on your controlling skills. This would result in a game over. However, it did not end up in the final game.

  • The original Metal Gear Solid is famous for its unique boss fights (mainly Psycho Mantis) but Kojima actually sees Decoy Octopus as an original approach to a boss fight as well: you’re expecting to fight him but never do.
  • Initially, MGS3’s nightmare sequence would have the player play the first stage of Gradius.

Kojima clearly wasn't ballsy enough with MGS2.



I actually thought his privates weren't dangling around because they were tightly tucked in from the cold.

Maybe it was hard to render penises on 6th gen hardware, or maybe Kojima wanted us to mistake him for a women, because you know.... He was created to be the opposite of snake and to ridicule the male types that usually take the rule in those action movies and games MGS pays homage to.

It's a basically a pseudo-review of the game that focuses on how it was made to play with the expectations of the fans. It's long, about 35min, and a little pretentious. Also starts off slow to make a point, but it's great if you're a fan of Metal Gear.

Edit: The video is made under the impression that video geames are art. I agree with him and I always bring up the Metal Gear franchise when when I argue that. Skip to 6:55 if you don't want to see the explanation of postmodernism.

i knew this was a Wright thread!, also... of course that idea wouldnt have worked, you can have someone decapitated on a game with tons of blood, but showing some extra skin is always a more "controversial" event...
