Next Level, the developer for Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, reportedly were working on a concept for a new Metroid game, according to German website Nintendo-Online. The news come from concept art released by an artist. The concept art was part of a pitch to Nintendo, that included a working prototype of the game. The studio instead ended up developing Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon.

"Yes that is real," a trusted source told Destructoid. "That’s the first I’d actually seen of that concept art, but a prototype was made before being shelved in favor of Luigi’s Mansion 2. It was about as bare-bones as it gets, but it was still pretty fun."

Shinya Takahashi, the general manager of Nintendo Software Planning & Development earlier this year stated that Nintendo has not forgotten the franchise.

"At this point we have two different types of Metroid games," said Takahashi. "We have the Prime style of Metroid game and we have the more traditional style of Metroid game. We feel that we do need to take care of both of these styles of play. And the hope is that at some point in the near future we'll be able to share something about them."
