Forums - Gaming Discussion - You know what I REALLY want? Retro City 64! (A Retro City Rampage Sequel)

Tagged games:

Retro City Rampage is one of the finest examples of game design in a long time. There's a demographic of gamers who started gaming on the NES, myself included. This game brings back the pure mindless fun that video games of old used to bring to me, and it's pure joy. It's the best indie game I've played at least. I have it on my Wii and 3DS.

But with that, there comes the question. What's next. Eventually, we'll all finish this joyrid, and while I can see a ton of replay value, I want to see more from the City of Theftropolis! More than that, I want to see Retro City jump into 3D. I want to make new references. Skip the SNES! I want to see a Nintendo 64-style Retro City game.

I've never wanted an "ugly" looking game so bad in my life! I want the blocky graphics, the midi sound, the referances to FF7, Super Mario 64, Mario Kart, Smash, Goldeneye, Ocarina of Time---EVERYTHING! Controlling cars in Retro City 64 like it's one big Mario Kart track! Flying planes like in Diddy Kong Racing! Bouncing on civilians like they're goombas in Mario 64! "Z-Targeting" gun conrolls! (with the TPS option as well, obviously) There are SO many possibilities for a game like this!

When ever I play Retro City Rampage, I remember the pure joy I got from playing Super Mario Bros. 3. I want Retro City 64 to be a thing so that I can remember how it felt when I first played super mario 64 again!

EDIT: What I really want is to see him get a dev team together and start a Kickstarter for this game. He's more than proved that he's a trustworthy developer, a talented developer, and a compitant developer. And honestly, I want this game to bring back the magic that I feel most modern games have lost.

That would be amazing, and I wholeheartedly echo your enthusiasm for Retro City Rampage. I was a little bummed that its reception was as mixed as it was, because as an NES kid, I found the TMNT underwater level alone to be worth the price of admission.

Right!? I loved that game lol. (TNMT NES) I don't care how much people hated it! Did you notice the other TNMT reference in the begining when you go down the pipe and hit the POW! Block? There are Ninja Turtles that flip upside down just like in the original Mario Bros. Seriously priceless!

Yeah, I did. I was completely amazed at how many references he was able to cram into one game. I seriously think the only complaint I had about the whole thing was the one terrible tailing mission that makes fun of how terrible tailing missions are but still manages to be as terrible as every other tailing mission. Other than that, it was a masterful love letter to my childhood.

Yeah, I do agree about the tailing mission. I really hope that he decides to make a 3D sequel though. It would be even more awesome.

I don't think the reception was mixed because it was NES like graphics.  Hotline Miami was highly rated afterall.

Retro City Rampage looked good and it had some good controls for the mechanics, but the mission design and everything was just incredibly boring.  The one thing I did like in RCR was the Runner mini game, and I actually like that better than the actual game.  I don't like the actual game because the colors in the actual game don't clash with one another so and it was so common to miss a jump pad  that blended into the background, making the whole game far more reliant on memorization than skill.

Oh, I'm not under the impression that it was because of the graphics. I'm well aware that people like you just have bad taste in games!

But I'd forgotten about the Bit Trip arcade game. That might have been even less fun than the tailing mission.

Well I like Hotline Miami, Yakuza, etc.  I have bad taste though, so they're just shitty games.

I think it's more like you have bad taste in games but there's an awesome game here and there that you like.  Retro City Rampage is not one of those awesome games.  It's one of those games that the developer put a lot of time and work into, but despite being able to make a game, doesn't know how to make a good game.

I think RCR is much better than either of those lol but I won't say you have a bad taste in games. I actually loved all of the missions, except the chase one. I disagree though. I think Vblank does know how to make a great game, and RCR is it. It's fantastic.
