Analysis
With exactly 1,000 points, roughly the most average ballot size of the year, December's vote was a step down from the massive 1,140 to 1,150 range of October and November. Nevertheless, it still provides some valuable data.
The top spot of the month goes to the likely yet to be renamed "X" for the Wii U. With 87 points, it had exactly 8.7% of the vote, more than any other exclusives or multiplatform titles. This is a notable 20 point increase over last month, remarkable considering the drop in overall votes. This is likely due to the crowded release schedule of November, including the massive Super Mario 3D World, being cleared out. In fact, the winner of this month in general was the Wii U, retaining over 30% of all points. THis is due once again to a relatively moderate number of major exclusives, including X, Super Smash Bros 4 (also on 3DS), Mario Kart 8, and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. The currently unrevealed yet announced Legend of Zelda game for the Wii U did surprisingly well, with 18 points. Also note how Bayonetta 2 and Watch Dogs performed decently, despite not being proper Nintendo games.
The 3DS, on the other hand, had by far its worst month all year, with only 60 points. For comparison's sake, the platform swerved from as low as 107 points in January to as high as 208 in June, making this by far the worst month the 3DS has seen in a long time. This is largely due to the low number of major exclusives announced; only Bravely Default made a major mark. Apparently, Mario Golf is not a big phenomenon, people are more excited for Smash Bros on a console, and nobody cares about Yoshi's New Island.
The PlayStation brand declined slightly month over month. The PS3 actually gained points, as the PS4 launch gave a bit of breathing room to the last generation of PS3 titles, including Gran Turismo 6, Tales of Xillia 2, and Dark Souls 2. The PS4 declined month over month, but not very much, likely due to the lack of anticipation for the actual launch lineup. Infamous: Second Son and Final Fantasy 15 alone netted over 100 points, and other notable games included Kingdom Hearts 3, Metal Gear Solid 5, Destiny, and Watch Dogs. The Vita, however, had about a month, barely getting over 30 points. Without Tearaway and with the US release of Ys, the only remaining title of note for the Vita is now Ys for Europe.
The Xbox 360 has copmpletely disappeared, replaced by the One. This was actually a relatively decent month for the brand, wioth over 54 points, compared to the 360's low point of 14 back in the spring. The most anticipated Xbox games are shooters: Titanfall, Halo, and Destiny. Note that two of these three games are actually new IP's, compared to the many sequels and pseudo-sequels of the Wii U and PS4.
The PC, meanwhile, is doing its own thing like usual. The big PC games of the month were multiplatform RPG's like South Park, The Witcher 3, Dragon Age, and Dark Souls 2.
