Forums - Gaming Discussion - Grand Theft Auto 5 “feels next-gen” to Rockstar, says firm

Grand Theft Auto 5 may not be releasing on next-gen consoles but the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions feel next-gen to Rockstar.

Speaking with IGN, Rockstar North associate technical director and combat designer Phil Hooker said part of the reason it feels next-gen to the developers is the team was familair with the hardware after developing GTA 4.

“Every aspect of the game had to be better, richer in gameplay and more fluid and knowing we were launching on the same platforms meant we could focus on extracting the most out of those consoles and making the game as fantastic as possible,” said Hooker.

“In the end we surpassed our own expectations and during development I think everyone working on the game has been astounded by improvements to the graphics, or new mechanics, or AI, or mission scope along the way.

“Hopefully the gamers will see all of these improvements at once in one go, compared to GTA 4 this definitely feels ‘next generation’ to us.”

Grand Theft Auto 5 will be released on September 17.

Well, GTA4 was said to be worse than San Andreas by gamers, so this being a next gen GTA basically means that Rockstar finally arrived in the seventh generation.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV (360+PS3) would outsell SSBB. I was wrong.

I can't wait to see what Rockstar can actually do on next gen.

If it feels next-gen, then next-gen platfroms would be a perfect fit, no?

So it is happening...PS4 preorder.

Greatness Awaits!

It's next gen compared to San Andreas :P

This means ps4 / xbox one version is imminent. I will get gta v in ps4 as well as ps3 version. Its gta v after all.

I'd say GTA5 (at least looks) more like the peak of the current gen, but it's certainly not next gen. To me something is only next gen when it isn't, within reason, possible on its predecessor.

If GTAV is like this on PS3/360, I wonder what GTA6 will be like on PS4/XBO.

What are they gonna say? "Hey are game looks kind of out of date with these new consoles coming out" I doubt that very much.
