Forums - Sony - PlayStation 4: it could be a downloadable console.

Tagged games:

I was thinking, with all the rumors about "SEE THE FUTURE" conference... the PlayStation4 could exist as either physical or downloadable console.

The physical version of PlayStation4 would be the traditional physical console.

The virtual/downloadable version of PlayStation4 would be simply an update app to PS3 and PSVita, that allows PlayStation4 games to be played via cloud gaming. Of course, this would be playable online only. And since Vita has no bluray drive, it would only play digital downloads of PS4 games.

People who already own a PS3 or PSV would only need to purchase the update to upgrade to PS4; or purchase the physical console and the virtual version for the Vita, for example, to allow for PlayStation4 play on the go. That's really next gen console quality experience on the Vita!!

What do you think? Could Sony do this? Would this finally push Vita sales (speaking of which, they should allow Vita to play PS3 games via cloud; Vita would play PS3/PS4/PSV/PSP/PSMobile games!).

Thoughts? Also, how would VGChartz track digital sales of PlayStation 4 consoles? Discuss.

Are you drunk?

I think this is very possible with PS4 cloud gaming also offered on all Sony Smart TVs (which is all really) and Sony phones/tablets (with bluetooth controller).

If they were smarter, it'd be on all Apple/Android devices but Sony never likes to share.

Well if that's the case then Sony is not getting my money because my internet is about as reliable as a bridge made out of peanut brittle.

Yes, this will happen. In fact, the PS3 has been available for digital download through th PSN stores for years now. VGChartz is MASSIVELY undertracking PS3 HW sales because they can't track digital.

Sigh...maybe in 10 years when broadband internet is actually spread far enough.

Gaikai will be important for the PS5, when most people actually have internet fast enough to properly use it. Also, for the "biggest" comeback in history Sony would have to surpass the PS2, no way in hell. Let's all just wait until the console is properly announced, goddamit. All this hype without any solid information is just annoying...

You can stream HD movies with a 6mbps connnection on netflix, and you can stream games with an 8mbps connection on onlive.. there shouldn't be a problem streaming games next year onto the next playstation.. considering most people have upped to a broadband connection in the U.S at least

According to this link 119 Mil. people in the US don't have broadband at all while 19 Mil. don't even have the option to get it. According to this link the average speed is 6.7Mbps, which would not be fast enough for onlive (so I'll go ahead and say it won't be enough for Gaikai either), so you can imagine how many people below average with broadband won't have the required speed either. Add the people without broadband in and certainly ~50-60% of the US citizens currently wouldn't be able to use a streaming service like Gaikai.

Don't get me wrong, Sony will probably turn Gaikai into something incredible, but this gen won't show Gaikai's true potential.^^

From another thread like this...

Never going to happen..

VITA 32 GIG CARD.250 GIG SLIM & 160 GIG PHAT PS3

well it could be but it's doubtful. the only way Sony could go full download, is if the games on PSN were vastly cheaper then retail.

Would that make PS3 next-gen or PS4 last-gen or...I'm confused.

Bring it on!

I actually only expect this for Vita though. No way would they let the PS3 play PS4 games.
